BACKGROUND:
Public Works Week, held in the 3rd or 4t" week of May of each year, is a celebration of the tens
of thousands of men and women in North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure
and services collectively known as public works.
Instituted as a public education campaign by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in
1960, Public Works Week calls attention to the importance of public works in community life.
The Week seeks to enhance the prestige of the often-unsung heroes of our society-the
professionals who serve the public good every day with quiet dedication.
2010 will mark the 12t" year that the City of Kitchener has celebrated Public Works Week.
Events conducted during Public Works Week include a golf tournament involving the City's
partners within the publicworksfield, an educational presentation to Grade 3 and 4 students, as
well as a public BBQ on Civic Square. All net proceeds generated through these events are
donated to the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada.
