DELEGATION 3.0Ontario Crafts Council (OCC), and its upcoming exhibition: Mary Calarco, SW Ontario Regional Coordinator OCC: non-profit group, focused on high end craft (akin to fine art and design), publishes ? Studio Magazine. Based in Toronto. Serves three regions: Eastern, South Western (Mary’s territory), and ? Northern Ontario. South West region has 200 members, province-wide, OCC has approx. 5,000 members, ? worldwide OCC reaches approx. 10,000 Regional Wish List: ? Fine craft category in KW Arts awards o One craft exhibition added to annual Rotunda Gallery rotation o Craft map for Waterloo Wellington o Satellite location of the Guild Shop (OCC retail location in Yorkville) or temporary o pop-up store for craftspeople to sell their work to public “Masterworks South West” is OCC South West’s 2010 travelling exhibition of juried crafts. ? Media: wood, glass, fiber, metal, clay o 101 submissions, about 40 will be part of exhibition o Visiting 5 locations: Owen Sound, Windsor, Guelph, Orton (north-west of Erin), o Tilsonburg Kitchener City Hall Rotunda was a desired location, but logistics/timing/ o appropriateness of space made is unfeasible. Goal is for “Masterworks South West” travelling exhibition to occur every 2-3 years o Discussion: Regarding craft category in KW Arts Awards, OCC South West could approach the Awards to ? make this request Still may be opportunities for the Masterworks South West 2010 travelling exhibition to ? appear in this region, timing of creation of promotional materials makes this a challenge to orchestrate No intention to find a permanent home for the works in the exhibition, as work will be for ? sale 1 February 2010 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, February 16, 2010 CITY OF KITCHENER DISCUSSION ITEMS 4.0Media Arts Subcommittee: report on results of February 10 meeting with media representatives (Kathleen Sheehy) Attendees (in addition to ACAC Sub group): ? Martin de Groot, Waterloo Region Arts Council, The Record columnist o Nancy Richards, CTV o Melinda Marks, Managing Editor, The Record o Don Bourgeois, Director WRTMC Board o Gabrielle Clermont (Dandy Productions), Publicist, Magnetic North o Brian Fox, OEB Enterprises (public relations firm) o Roger Farwell, Prosperity Council o Purpose of meeting: Explore how information to regional arts/culture communities on best ? practices in media relations can be improved, developed and delivered. Challenge to Media: balancing breaking news and other reporting (arts and culture) ? Resources also an issue in coverage o Media provided specifics on how to effectively communicate with them: ? Be clear, concise, direct o Think creatively to be exciting to media o Stories must have visuals, not just a talking head (re: promotion) o Media is not looking for info, arts groups must push their stories o Media’s job is not to teach arts groups; Marketing Strategy for arts is needed ? Could Enabling Organization help with that? o Need expressed for educational piece (marketing to media) o Could possibly fit into the ABC Conference set for April 17, 2010 o Gabriella Clermont (publicist for Magnetic North) will share media contact information she is ? gathering with Arts community; Susan Cudahy (WRTMC) will provide access to her media database to members OUTSTANDING ITEM: Arts Marketing Strategy ? OUTSTANDING ITEM: Sharing of media contact information ? 5.0Facilitated multicultural discussion (March 16): set discussion questions CPII recommendation # 24: Mentor/host program for newcomer/multicultural artists—database of artists willing to volunteer as supporters and mentors to newcomer artists Invite participants to arrive at 5 pm (5-6 active participants, 3-5 questions, for 1 hour.) ? ACTION: Staff to provide nametags This discussion to take place at March 16 ACAC meeting. A roundtable format, not a “panel” ? Participants invited: ? Azam Fouk Aladeh (Multicultural Cinema Club), o Martin de Groot (Waterloo Region Arts Council), o Majdi Bou Matar (MT Space), o Isabel Cisterna (Neruda Productions) o Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WRIEN) Rep? o MultiCultural Centre rep? o ACTION: Staff to invite reps from WRIEN and MultiCultural Centre These people were involved in Multicultural workshop sessions in preparation of CPII, so they ? may provide insight on the recommendations, and can comment on what has changed in the community in the mean time. Networking may have answered needs, social networking may make a databank unnecessary ? Guelph Business Centre may be looking for networking opportunities in Guelph for o newcomer artists, this group could be consulted following roundtable session ACTION: Juan Bohorquez to investigate activities of Guelph Business Centre Questions will focus the discussion. They will be distributed in advance to participants. We ? will ask participants to prepare in advance: What’s the current situation, what’s on the ground now? o What are statistics on constituency? (i.e.—how many artist newcomers are there o annually?) What are gaps/What is needed? o Who will take action? What’s the action plan? o ACTION: Staff to inform all invitees of questions, format and start time FIRE ALARM: 4:55-5:05 INFORMATION ITEMS 6.0Special Events strategic review update: Don Chapman No update, Don Chapman unable to attend ? 7.0ACAC membership update: staff As per direction from Clerk’s, staff’s recommendations on membership go to ACAC for ? information; staff prepares a report to Council; Council to appoint two new members out of the candidates Four candidates excellent candidates came forward to fill two vacancies (Ann MacKenzie ? Martino, Betti Erb, Hilary Abel, Helena Redshaw). A Youth member (under 30) is a goal. ? Based on backgrounds of candidates, breadth of their experience and gaps in representation ? around the ACAC table, staff recommends Ann MacKenzie Martino and Helena Redmond ACTION: Item to Special Council agenda for March 8 Council staff recommendations) ACTION: Staff/chairperson to send a thank you letter to all candidates, advising of decision making process, inviting candidates not selected at this time to reapply for next term 8.0ACAC/Downtown Advisory Committee/Economic Development Committee update Joint Meeting on Wednesday, March 24, 11 am, Conestoga Room ? RSVP to Carrie ? EDAC Chair (Rebecca Short) and staff liaison(Silvia de Donato) are preparing a draft agenda ? for the joint meeting 9.0CultureCamp Report: Saturday, February 13, 2010, Rotunda, City Hall A good opportunity for arts community to share ideas and make connections ? An “unconference”: participants set the agenda ? Session Topics include: Centre for Community Innovation and Design (next steps), ? McLennan Park Public Meeting: mockup of Gerry Houghton’s “Moments” artwork was ? displayed; comments were generally favourable. Storm water management: A tiered flat fee structure to be implemented. ? Rates to be set in May, 2010 o Household rate, industrial rate, tax exempt rate, and commercial rate. o Household rate to have different levels, multiple family, vs. single rate o Not entirely a new tax, but still potentially an increase. o Some of it removed from current levy o Forecasting a 6% increase in taxes for next year; new Council next year ? 11.0Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report: Alison Burkett Public Art Survey (part of master plan project) is now closed, about 50 responses received) ? Student Video Contest for The Cube: ? Advertising will occur at the end of month o Contest closes at end of June 30, 2010 o Public art at Belmont Avenue ? PAWG providing input in call for entry o Business Improvement Area (BIA)is a stakeholder o Sites are limited for public art, BIA suggesting they want figurative art o PAWG members to visit site and discuss at March meeting o PAWG discussing need to educate citizens about public art ? Opportunity to educate stakeholders and jurors on public art projects o Lack of public awareness o Staff to do brochure and map and post it on web o Artist in Residence, Stefan Rose presenting a talk about large format photography in the ? Conestoga Room on Sunday, Feb 21, at 2 pm Staff sent out invitation to ACAC to distribute o PAWG considering CAFKA’s desire to add a legacy feature to its event every 2 years ? Perhaps a longer-term temporary installation (5 yrs?), or a permanent installation o This could be addressed through current development of public art master plan o 12.0Downtown Advisory Committee Report: Peter Hammond Sonia Lewis of Kitchener Public Library (KPL) presented to DAC regarding addition: ? 20,000 sq ft added to ground floor; 5, 000 upstairs for children’s library o 412 parking spots (new parking structure) o Currently 1000 users, projecting 2000 with expansion o Green roof is part of plan o Some of current parking area will be turned into gardens as a green space courtyard o Architecture of expansion will complement Governeror’s mansion o During renovations, some library programming will move to Market o John McBride, Transportation presented to DAC regarding parking: ? parking surveyed in June 2009 during peak periods 8 am-6 pm, 7 days a week o On street parking and off street parking opportunities are maxed out o In September 2010, a new parking garage at Charles and Benton will open (approx o 464 spaces—but 200 of those will be dedicated to public courthouse and grandfathered parking arrangements of the Cora Group) 4 February 2010 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, February 16, 2010 CITY OF KITCHENER DAC Brainstormed ideas of how the committee can support Downtown initiatives: ? Web promo o Innovative industry promotion o Promote events o Peter Hammond suggested DAC look at actions Burlington has taken to further o downtown promotion (a resource book/guide in hotels, with coupons for restaurants, theatres, shopping….) Peter Hammond reported to DAC on ACAC’s activities: ? DAC interested in Prosperity Council report at last ACAC meeting, DAC sees o opportunities for Enabling Organization to operate in the downtown DAC not aware of grants process (Community Investment Strategy) o 13.0Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) Report: Len Carter Len absent, no update ? 14.0Members Updates Registry Theatre plans to assist KPL during construction by hosting “Ideas and Issues” series ? starting in Fall 2010 Peter Hammond sees Local Focus Film Festival (Multicultural Cinema Club, Azam Fouk ?
