DISCUSSION ITEMS 3.0Recap of last meeting’s Facilitated Multicultural discussion: Staff Finding from Facilitated Multicultural discussion at last meeting: there is a need for a ? networking session for newcomer artists. Newcomer arts professionals could also be included. Research indicates (2006) that there are approximately 300-400 self-identified immigrant ? artists in the region. Follow up meeting scheduled: ? Wednesday, April 21 at 2 pm, Pipe Room. ACAC members welcome to attend. o Invitees: reps from Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WRIEN), o Multicultural Cinema Club, Multicultural Centre, the Y, MT Space, Neruda Productions, Waterloo Regional Arts Council and the city. Purpose: to determine if the idea of hosting a networking session for newcomer o artists is feasible. City’s role: to facilitate discussion. City would provide a venue. Organizations must be ? actively involved. ACTION: Staff to provide an update on developments at May ACAC meeting 4.0Recap of ACAC/Downtown Advisory Committee/Economic Development Committee meeting (March 24): Staff Meeting notes being prepared; not available yet. ? ACAC members in attendance: Jennifer Breithaupt, Alison Burkett, Kathleen Sheehy, Juan ? Bohorquez, Lawrence McNaught, Len Carter. ACTION: when notes are ready, ACAC to discuss findings. 5.0ACAC Report to Community on CPII Last ACAC report to community: February 2009 at Registry Theatre. Included update on ? Culture Plan II recommendations, Magnetic North Theatre Festival (MNTF) introduction and performance aspect. This is an initiative ACAC would like to pursue ? Should ACAC report each year, or every second year? Current ACAC term ends November 30, ? 2010. Should next report to community coincide with end of term? ACAC’s Terms of Reference states that ACAC undertakes ‘information sharing on arts o and culture issues throughout the community’. Brainstorming about Format: ? Provide CPII update; could update CPII brochure o Magnetic North could provide recap o Have a multicultural focus: could invite newcomer artists and WRIEN; could use it as o a networking session?; could include a theatre performance by multicultural group Include Artist in Residence program o Include City’s arts programming for youth (contest for Student Video on Cube, could o show video); could invite high school students to describe their experiences with the City’s programs Include ACAC’s accomplishments over the past 18 months: Show how ACAC has o connected with the media Susan Cudahy could speak on WRTMC activities o Include testimonials; they are meaningful o Do an “Arts Year in Review”: a variety of participants; message is good news from o 2010 re: accomplishments. Susan Cudahy of Waterloo Regional Tourism and Marketing Corporation organized a o session between ACAC Arts/Media Subcommittee and media representatives ACAC prepared questions for the media including what is the best way to disseminate o information to arts community and how to communicate with the media A workshop session (delivered by Don Chapman, Manager, Special Events) about ? communicating with the media was included at the Arts Business Creativity conference on April 17 Media Handbook: no update. ? ACAC wants to ask formally about status of Media Handbook o Gabriella Clermont (MNTF) had said that she would provide her media list of contacts o for the arts community. List is in progress, she will share it when complete. Not sure how to share it with the arts community. Challenge: Lists are being created for specific purposes, so lists reflect individual o project’s purposes. However, someone must work to keep the list accurate and up to date. 7.0Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report: Alison Burkett On a motion made by Alison Burket “That ACAC endorse the jury selection of artist Gordon Wright’s proposal for public art at Kingsdale Community Centre” Discussion: Former arena being renovated into a community centre o $28,000 is budget for public art (interior) o National public art competition held o 8 submissions received o Jury selected Gordon Wright’s proposal of 50 mouth blown glass roundels o suspended from foyer ceiling; represents diversity Artist’s studio is in Glenn Morris, Ontario. o Public Art at Kitchener Public Library: 78 expressions of interest received; jury met April 8 ? and identified 5 semi-finalists; semi-finalists will be compensated for preparing detailed concepts and maquettes (stage 2); Approvals in June Student Video Competition: Deadline is June 30 ? 8.0Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report: Peter Hammond Deferred ? 9.0Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) Report: Len Carter Deferred ? 10.0Council Report: Kelly Galloway Festival of Neighbourhoods: this initiative provides the opportunity for inclusive, self- ? defined neighbourhood groups to win a $10,000 grant to undertake a community project Youth: Kitchener Youth Action Council will host the Youth awards on May 6 in the Rotunda; ? May Rotunda Gallery exhibition is by students of WCI, student artist reception is May 6, 5 pm Referendum: this question will be included on the next municipal election ballot ? 11.0Members’ Updates Art in the park: Does this initiative exist in Kitchener? No immediate plans. Purpose of ? event and target audience would have to be determined. A juried competition? An exhibition? A sale? Where would it take place? ‘Artworks’ was a former Kitchener arts festival (evolved into CAFKA). Current opportunities: Tooney Tuesdays, “Animate the Street” … Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery: Holding a session on sustainability, public welcome, ? Wednesday, April 28 6:30-8:30 at Rim Park Lost and Found Theatre: presenting ‘Falling: A Wake’ by Gary Kirkham. Opens April 28 at ? the Registry Theatre. Kitchener Waterloo Musical Productions: Spring show is ‘I Love You Because’. Opens May 6. ? Seeking sponsors in business to provide support. Schools involved include: Eastwood, Bluevale, Waterloo Oxford, GRCI. REQUEST: that Holde Gerlach be formally acknowledged at the next meeting for her interest in and support of the arts in our community: for example, her regular attendance as a guest at ACAC meetings. Newcomer arts professionals could also be included. Research indicates (2006) that there are approximately 300-400 self-identified immigrant ? artists in the region. Follow up meeting scheduled: ? Wednesday, April 21 at 2 pm, Pipe Room. ACAC members welcome to attend. o Invitees: reps from Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WRIEN), o Multicultural Cinema Club, Multicultural Centre, the Y, MT Space, Neruda Productions, Waterloo Regional Arts Council and the city. Purpose: to determine if the idea of hosting a networking session for newcomer o artists is feasible. City’s role: to facilitate discussion. City would provide a venue. Organizations must be ? actively involved. ACTION: Staff to provide an update on developments at May ACAC meeting 4.0Recap of ACAC/Downtown Advisory Committee/Economic Development Committee meeting (March 24): Staff Meeting notes being prepared; not available yet. ? Susan Cudahy of Waterloo Regional Tourism and Marketing Corporation organized a o session between ACAC Arts/Media Subcommittee and media representatives ACAC prepared questions for the media including what is the best way to disseminate o information to arts community and how to communicate with the media A workshop session (delivered by Don Chapman, Manager, Special Events) about ? communicating with the media was included at the Arts Business Creativity conference on April 17 Media Handbook: no update. ? ACAC wants to ask formally about status of Media Handbook o Gabriella Clermont (MNTF) had said that she would provide her media list of contacts o for the arts community. List is in progress, she will share it when complete. Not sure how to share it with the arts community. Challenge: Lists are being created for specific purposes, so lists reflect individual o project’s purposes. However, someone must work to keep the list accurate and up to date. 7.0Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report: Alison Burkett On a motion made by Alison Burket “That ACAC endorse the jury selection of artist Gordon Wright’s proposal for public art at Kingsdale Community Centre” Discussion: Former arena being renovated into a community centre o $28,000 is budget for public art (interior) o National public art competition held o 8 submissions received o Jury selected Gordon Wright’s proposal of 50 mouth blown glass roundels o suspended from foyer ceiling; represents diversity Artist’s studio is in Glenn Morris, Ontario. o Public Art at Kitchener Public Library: 78 expressions of interest received; jury met April 8 ? and identified 5 semi-finalists; semi-finalists will be compensated for preparing detailed concepts and maquettes (stage 2); Approvals in June Student Video Competition: Deadline is June 30 ? 8.0Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report: Peter Hammond Deferred ? 9.0Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) Report: Len Carter Deferred ? 10.0Council Report: Kelly Galloway Festival of Neighbourhoods: this initiative provides the opportunity for inclusive, self- ? defined neighbourhood groups to win a $10,000 grant to undertake a community project Youth: Kitchener Youth Action Council will host the Youth awards on May 6 in the Rotunda; ?
