DELEGATION Information on Wonderful Waterloo’s ‘Livable Waterloo Region’ event: Andrew Hilliard Wonderful Waterloo is a group, 270 members strong, of urban promoters interested in ? sharing information about urban development and fostering communication on urban issues Hosts a community blog and holds quarterly meetings ? Next meeting: Saturday, August 21, 10-3, Rotunda, City Hall, free ? Topics include: positive environmental impacts of adaptively reusing/preserving heritage ? buildings; local transportation system; capacity for local food in hospitals; walkability of our cities; role of aesthetics in planning/architecture; incubator cluster development in our region; geek culture. DISCUSSION ITEMS 3.0ACAC achievements Report to Council: Jennifer Breithaupt Committee reviewed draft report for presentation to Council on September 13 ? At Alison Burkett’s suggestion, the following topics were added to the report to link with the ? 2009/2010 work plan: Consideration of Board of Governance training for not-for-profit groups (see item # 6) o Collection of audience statistics now a reporting requirement for groups receiving grants o through city’s community investment strategy tier two grants Committee received information from Waterloo Region Tourism Marketing Corporation o Report includes ACAC’s priorities for future Culture Plan implementation (based on CPII ? recommendations): 1.Defining the city’s role in arts and culture development within the context of the Region’s position and the positions of other private and public sector agencies. 2.Developing strategies for youth engagement in arts and culture. 1 August 2010 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, August 17, 2010 CITY OF KITCHENER 3.Developing a feasibility study as a first step for a downtown multiuse arts centre; ACAC to contribute to scope of study 4.Developing an arts and culture cluster development strategy in partnership with economic development agencies, arts organizations, and private enterprise. 5.Developing strategies to build audiences and cultural tourism. Re: #3 (multiuse downtown arts centre) ? Feasibility study on downtown multiuse arts centre is required to make a case to Council, o whether or not City partners with private sector or undertakes independently ACAC should have input on the feasibility study’s terms of reference and scope o Arts community to be consulted during study o ACTION: Gabrielle Clermont attending September ACAC meeting to present information on “Treehaus”. Staff to contact her to determine appropriateness of inviting the developer she worked with to the meeting. ACTION: Staff to develop a PowerPoint presentation to support Jennifer Breithaupt’s presentation of the report to Council. INFORMATION ITEMS 4.0Update on facilitated multicultural discussion: Staff Representatives of Multicultural Cinema Club, Multicultural Centre, MT Space, Neruda ? Productions, Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network (WREIN), Waterloo Region Arts Council, YMCA continue meeting to explore feasibility of mentorship/internship program for newcomer artists in our region; working through a discussion document Next meeting: September 15 ? 5.0Tapestry Festival: Brian Scott Began in 2003 ? Month-long (June) annual series of festivals and events exploring diversity of our community. ? (Tri-Pride, Our World Festival of Music, Silk Road, Kites of Joy and Freedom Festival, Multicultural Cinema Club initiatives, Latitudes Storytelling Festival, Multicultural Festival, Aboriginal Day…). City’s Special Events unit collaborates with arts organizations to: ? Develop partnerships and programming o Enhance capacity of participating groups o Nurture growth of quality events o Tapestry group is a collaborative of independent event organizers who provide direction and ? key decision making to support this special events initiative Funding: Tapestry model leverages ability of individual organizers to apply for grants and ? raise funds; also provides core operational funding in support of projects. Tapestry project funders include: Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, KW Community Foundation, Waterloo Regional Arts Fund, city’s Community Investment grants process, Heritage Canada. Receives significant in-kind support from the media. Supported by a comprehensive promotional campaign managed by Corporate ? Capacity Waterloo Region and Volunteer Action centre both offer training for Board members ? of non-profit agencies (for a fee) City’s Volunteer Resources department doesn’t have the capacity to provide this kind of ? training, instead, refers groups seeking to build board member’s skills to the Volunteer Action Centre City cannot compel groups receiving community investment grants to take board training, ? and this sort of training may not meet the needs of all groups Conestoga College now offers training course for non-profit managers ? ACAC ideas: ? Capacity Waterloo and Volunteer Action Centre could market their board training o programs to groups receiving city of Kitchener community investment grants City could provide information to groups receiving grants about board training o opportunities 7.0Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report: Staff Student Video Competition goals: ? Raise awareness of the Cube o Generate Cube content o Engage youth o A ‘call for video submissions’ was advertised, open to registered students from high schools, ? colleges and universities in the region July 12: PAWG served as jury. Select finalists and winners in two categories (high school, ? and post secondary) Mayor Zehr will present prizes to winners at Council on September 7 ? Launch reception will take place in front of Silver Spoon Chocolates on King Street across ? from City Hall from 7:30-8:30. ACAC members invited to attend 8.0Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report: Peter Hammond No report, DAC hasn’t met lately ? 9.0Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) Report No report in Len Carter’s absence ? 10.0Council Report: Kelly Galloway Bridgeport community centre project progressing slowly, encountering challenges ? Projects funded in part through stimulus funding coming in over budget—federal funding ? encouraged municipalities to undertake projects, amount of work available for contractors ballooned, causing demand (and costs) to increase Local Habitat for Humanity build project seeking volunteers ? Nominations for council positions due September 10, 2 pm ? 11.0Members’ Updates Registry Theatre: JM drama presents Cabaret: August 20, 21. ?
