Location: Downtown Kitchener, 260 King St. W, above Shopper’s Drug Mart ? Co-founders: Natalie MacNeil and Gabrielle Clermont ? Provides workspace, facilitates shared resources and a collaborative community experience ? Membership options (includes wireless internet, no telephone): ? Pay As You Go, $20/day (common desk space) o Resident Lite, $157/month (access to common desk space up to 10 days a month) o Resident, $197/month (full time desk) o Member without space: $50/year, able to attend workshops o Meeting rooms/boardrooms (capacity: 10) available for booking (free to residents) ? Fully rented (18 residents representing 14 organizations). Tenants include Numus, KW Arts ? Awards, web designers, animators, game developers, charities… Treehaus ideas for future: ? Provide incubator space for arts organizations (subsidized) o Develop a curatorship/mentorship program—capitalize on available wall space to o feature exhibitions and integrate into arts community Provide temporary office space downtown for festivals taking place in the core. o Treehaus is membership driven, so future plans will depend on needs of members o 18 residents, representing 14 orgs o Building owner (Bernie Neimer) considering adding a theatre to building in o collaboration with the community. Could offer multifunctional event space INFORMATION ITEMS 4.0Update on facilitated multicultural discussion: staff Participants: representatives of Multicultural Cinema Club, Multicultural Centre, MT Space, ? Neruda Productions, Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network, Waterloo Region Arts Council, and YMCA. 1 September 2010 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, September 21, 2010 CITY OF KITCHENER Group has been working since May, exploring possibility of a mentorship program for ? newcomer artists. This is a recommendation from CulturePlan II. City facilitated all the meetings/discussion. Outcomes: ? Neruda Productions applied for KW Community Foundation grant to work o independently on expanding their current activities serving newcomer artists YMCA may work on initiatives adding mentoring for artists to the existing mentorship o program Findings: ? Mentors from the arts community are required o Immigrant artists feel a need for a space to work/showcase their work. A rehearsal o space—a multicultural multipurpose arts centre? This need for a multiuse arts space comes up repeatedly in different contexts; o related to ACAC’s identification of a priority for the future: a feasibility study as a first step for a downtown multiuse arts centre Group to meet again in 3-6months for status update ? 5.0ACAC Achievements Report to Council: Jennifer Breithaupt Jennifer Breithaupt presented ACAC’s report on achievements to Community Services ? Committee (CSC) on September 13. CSC responded positively ? Highlights: ? ACAC’s CPII accomplishments o Mentorship initiative for newcomer artists ? Arts and media relations ? Networking opportunities ? Youth membership on committee ? ACAC’s priorities for future CulturePlan implementation o Define city’s roles in arts and cuture development ? Develop strategies for youth in arts and culture ? Downtown multiuse arts centre feasibility study ? Arts and culture cluster development strategy in partnership with others ? Audience development ? CSC asked questions about the recommendation, “to develop a feasibility study as a first ? step for a downtown multiuse arts centre, ACAC to contribute to scope of study”. Asked about what’s missing (rehearsal space) o Councillor Gazzola (past ACAC member) praised the committee’s focused activities ? 6.0Public Art Working Group (PAWG) Report: Cheryl York ? Artist in Residence Stefan Rose Working on photography and poetry for Grand River Transit buses o Reading at Word on the Street on Sunday, September 26 o Working on a video for ‘The Cube’ in November o Rotunda Gallery will showcase his work in December o Will submit a proposal to PAWG for a commissioned work ($5,000). Artist in o residence commissions are one way the city acquires artworks for its collection. ? CAFKA Received a Trillium Grant, and is working with Musagetes organization to present o a lecture series in the Rotunda of city hall (Oct. 5, Nov 10) Wants city to collaborate on a longer term temporary installation project as part o of CAFKA 2011 event 2 September 2010 - ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES Tuesday, September 21, 2010 CITY OF KITCHENER ? Student Video Competition—PAWG considering if it should be a national competition ? Public art projects Country Hills Community Library: Jefferson Campbell Cooper’s piece, “In Time” o to be installed this week (1500 Block Line Road) Parking Garage Charles & Benton: Ted Fullerton’s work, “Pedestrian” to be o installed in October McLennan Park: Gerry Houghton’s work, “Moments” to be installed December or o spring 2011 ? Bullas Sculptures will be installed at Centre in the Square, floor needs reinforcement ? Rotunda Gallery 2011 exhibition competition: over 50 responses received. PAWG making selections on October 12 7.0Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report: Peter Hammond Deadline for reapplication to advisory committees: October 1 ? DAC evaluated its meeting format. Will continue with a 1 hour meetings followed by one ? hour of working groups DAC will report to Council on the work of its sub groups/work groups ? DAC discussed: Google’s future location in the Lang Tannery, continued King Street ? reconstruction, regional rapid transit DAC considered Civic District Urban Square: ? Located in civic district, atop the underground parking garage by Kitchener Public o Library Economic Development staff presented three themes for DAC to consider: an eye, a o meandering river, and walls. Eye theme is preferred. Could feature a park, seating, walkways, vending areas, public art. Ice rink, water features? ACAC supports the integration of public art into the space; public art should be o considered during the design phase, not added at the end of process DAC received an update on the Downtown Strategic Plan: ? DAC’s focus continues to be: more residents, more retail, more vitality and more o infrastructure. ACAC’s identified priority for a feasibility study on a downtown multiuse arts centre o is aligned with DAC’s objectives (more vitality, more infrastructure) 8.0Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) Report: Len Carter See DAC report above, similar items are on EDAC’s agenda ? ACAC’s identified priority for a feasibility study on a downtown multiuse arts centre is also ? aligned with EDAC’s objectives ACTION: Len Carter (ACAC rep to EDAC), to ask EDAC for support or endorsement of ACAC’s recommendation regarding a feasibility study for a downtown multiuse arts centre ACTION: Peter Hammond, ACAC rep to DAC, to make same request of DAC 9.0Council Report: Kelly Galloway No report in Councillor Galloway’s absence ? 10.0Members’ Updates Homer Watson House and Gallery: Opening reception on October 17 for exhibitions by ? Susan Spencer Gervais, Patricia Harris, and Cynthia Kemerer Lost and Found Theatre: Young Company will present Romeo and Juliet at the Conrad ? centre, coming up Registry Theatre: Classics at the Registry program started on September 19 with Baroque for ? the Birds.
