Shelley welcomed all members to the meeting. Given the limited numbers, the group decided to hear a short update from Rod on the Parking Strategy, and start the meeting at 4:00 in November when more members are available to attend. 1. Update on Parking Strategy ? With the assistance of a PowerPoint presentation, Rod provided Compass Kitchener with an update on the Parking Strategy. ? The City of Kitchener is third densest Central urban employment centre in the GTA. Downtown Toronto and Hamilton are first and second respectively. ? In 2008, downtown total employment population was 12,214, with only 7,260 spaces available. ? Consistently, downtown businesses have grown 5% each year over the past 5 years, and they are showing no signs of slowing. With this continuous growth, parking is needed. ? An efficient transit system is vital to downtown parking, and will alleviate the need for a significant increase in parking over the long term. ? Surface lots are less expensive than underground parking or parking garages, however are less desirable due to aesthetics and the space they consume. ? The original plans for the Civic Centre District were resurrected by staff and still determined to be a great long term goal. ? Rod reviewed potential future scenarios, including conservative, aggressive and integrated scenarios as well as an anticipated scenario, indicating that Light Rail Transit was identified as a ‘game changer’ ? As a region, we have the highest number of vehicle users, however in our downtown, we are one of the best for transit use. ? Some of the final recommendations include working close with Transportation Demand Management efforts, continued review of the parking requirements and monitoring of supply and demand annually, update of the strategy every 5 years and annual review of the surface lots. ? Compass Kitchener will receive an update on the Economic Development Strategy in early 2011. 2. General Business ? November meeting to start at 4:00 p.m. Meeting adjourned at 5:40.
