Recruitment Challenges
• Aging physician workforce (40% of Active physicians are 50+)
• Supply vs demand
• Competition with teaching centres
• Competitive market (e.g. signing bonuses)
• Limited resources
Improved Access to Services
With cities' investments the hospitals have established the following services for
the residents of Kitchener-Waterloo in the past 5 years:
• Fully staffed Emergency Departments
• Neurology clinic
• Neurosurgery outpatient clinic
• Infectious disease consultations
Since January 2005 GRH/SMGH has successfully recruited 88 specialist physi-
cians to Kitchener-Waterloo!

Future Direction
With continued support from the Kitchener City Council of $10,000 annually the
hospitals would focus their efforts on two primary goals:
Recruitment for under serviced
specialties:
• Plastic Surgery
• Cardiology
• Pathology
Evolve into a full teaching hospital
• Clinical clerks
• Residents (Internal Medicine and
Psychiatry)
