WARD(S) INVOLVED: All
DATE OF REPORT: June 20, 2011
REPORT NO.: CAO-11-012
SUBJECT: COMPASS KITCHENER 2011-2012 WORKPLAN
RECOMMENDATION:
The Compass Kitchener Work Plan 2011-2012, as attached to Report CAO-11-012, be
approved.
BACKGROUND:
The 2008 Advisory Committee Review required advisory committees to develop and implement
an annual or bi-annual work plan, with the assistance of staff, and for the approval of Council.
With the completion of it's responsibilities in identifying and confirming the community's priorities
and strategic directions for the achievement of same, and reporting the findings to Council,
Compass Kitchener has determined it's own best placed focus and efforts in support of
community priorities and offers this work plan to that end.
REPORT:
Compass Kitchener plays a number of roles related to the City's strategic plan; facilitating
conversation and knowledge exchange with the community, determining the community's
priorities for the future and conveying them to Council, monitoring and providing comment on
the municipality's realization of the citizens' vision and goals, and - in some cases -assumes
responsibility for the completion of certain initiatives. The specifics have been laid out in
Compass Kitchener's 2011-2012 Work Plan, with priority consideration to the following:
• Review, renew and deliver the Annual and Term-by-Term Progress Reports to City
Council and Citizens,
• Build awareness regarding the City's Strategic Plan and - in particular -the
Community Priorities,
• Design and deliver "CIVICS 101" programming, with a view to awareness building
and engagement for youth municipal government,

• Support and/or partner with others in leadership and community engagement
initiatives (e.g., Kitchener Youth Advisory Committee, Economic Development, Local
Immigration Partnership) with priority given to youth and newcomers, and
• Continue to host twice yearly All Advisory Committee meetings.
At its May and June 2012 meetings, Compass Kitchener identified working groups to move
forward on action items related to the above goals. An annual update on progress will come to
Council in Winter 2011-2012.
ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN:
Compass Kitchener's primary role and responsibility is in support of the City's Strategic Plan
and, in particular, the development and monitoring of the achievement of the Community `s
vision, priorities and strategic focus as a means of attaining the vision. In addition, `projects' are
chosen based on fit with and priority in relation to that plan and, in the current workplan, support
the areas of Leadership and Community Engagement, Diversity and Quality of Life.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
N/A Financial and staff resources for the above noted initiatives are available as part of the
ongoing operating budget associated with the activities of Compass Kitchener. In addition, the
City benefits from the added resources of a Masters of Social Work Intern(s) on an annual
basis.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
Compass Kitchener's work is firmly grounded in the intent, findings and subsequently developed
goals and strategies for attaining the vision citizens' expressed for through Who are you,
Kitchener?. In addition, efforts will draw upon community expertise and engage members of the
public beyond committee membership and/or partner, as required.
