SUBJECT:
New Appointments to Compass Kitchener Advisory
Committee
RECOMMENDATION:
That Council approves the appointment of Sue Morgan, Chris Kopar, Diana Bumstead
and David Yoon to the Compass Kitchener Advisory Committee for the term ending
November 30, 2012.
REPORT:
The Compass Kitchener Advisory Committee validates the Compass Kitchener Vision (2000),
Guiding Principles, Values, and Strategic Priorities on a regular basis, with the community’s
input and participation. This Committee creates and leads public processes to determine
community concerns, to identify priorities for action, and to monitor progress toward achieving
the community vision. The community priorities comprise an integral component of the City of
Kitchener Strategic Plan.
Over the last two months, Compass Kitchener has endeavoured to fill several vacant positions,
with a goal to round out the committee to more broadly represent the community and bring skills
and interests to the table in support of this group’s mandate. Potential new members attended
the November 2011 meeting, shared their skills, knowledge and experience in community
engagement, research and evaluation, and subsequently confirmed their interest in appointment
to the Committee.
Staff are seeking Council’s approval to appoint Sue Morgan, Chris Kopar, Diana Bumstead and
David Yoon to the Compass Kitchener Advisory Committee.
ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN:
Strategic directions under the community priority Leadership & Community Engagement
describe helping citizens to provide input and become more actively engaged in decision-
é ó ï
making (Promote Informed Decisions That Last), as well as supporting citizens in making a
difference in their communities (Cultivating Local Leadership). Appointment to the Compass
Kitchener Advisory Committee provides an opportunity for both.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
N/A.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
The citizen advisory committees are considered essential to the City of Kitchener’s approach to
community engagement.
