HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSD-12-016 - Curling Event Agreement REPORT TO: Council DATE OF MEETING: January 16, 2012 SUBMITTED BY: Jeff Willmer, Deputy CAO Community Services, 741-2325 PREPARED BY: Keith Baulk, Director of Enterprise, 741-2393 WARD(S) INVOLVED: All DATE OF REPORT: January 12, 2012 REPORT NO.: CSD-12-016 SUBJECT: Curling Event Agreement RECOMMENDATION: That should the City of Kitchener be awarded the 2013 Canadian Curling Pre-Trials and subject to the satisfaction of the City Solicitor, the Mayor and Clerk be authorized to execute two agreements; one a hosting agreement with the Canadian Curling Association and a second, a local host partnership agreement (City of Kitchener, Westmount Golf and Curling Club, and K-W Granite Club). REPORT: As communicated previously in Report No. CSD-11-122 at Council on August 29, 2011, the City of Kitchener has been short-listed as the potential host site for the 2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Pre-trials called “The Road to the Roar”. In the event the City is indeed selected to host the event, a hosting agreement will need to be executed between the Host and the Canadian Curling Association (CCA). It will outline the operational responsibility for each of the parties. In addition, a separate agreement (letter of understanding) will be developed describing the roles of each of the host committee partners (City of Kitchener, Westmount Golf and Country Club, and K-W Granite Club). The reason that approval is being requested prior to being awarded the event is due to the quick turn-around time that will be required to finalize the agreements in order to take advantage of promotional opportunities associated with major televised curling event this winter. We expect the CCA to make an announcement of the host City in the next week to 10 days. ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN: This major pre-Olympic event aligns with the Quality of Life component of the City’s Strategic Plan. Specifically, it touches on “Nurturing a Sense of Pride and Community” as well as a “Focus on Vitality”. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: . Non related to this recommendation COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: There will be opportunities for the public to be part of the “Road to the Roar” as volunteers or spectators for the event. A communications plan will be developed with our stakeholders if the City is selected. ACKNOWLEDGED BY: Jeff Willmer, Deputy CAO, Community Services Department
