HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSD-12-033 - Affiliation of Kitchener Waterloo Predators Volleyball Club1 Staff Re,~ort KIT(;x~l\`~.R tammunity Services Department www.kitthenerca REPORT TO: Community and Infrastructure Services Committee DATE OF MEETING: February 27, 2012 SUBMITTED BY: Mark Hildebrand, Director, Community Programs and Services , 741-2687 PREPARED BY: Denise Keelan, Manager of Aquatics and Athletics 741-2706 Bob Cheyne, Supervisor of Athletics 741-2989 WARD(S) INVOLVED: all DATE OF REPORT: February 15, 2012 REPORT NO.: CSD-12-033 SUBJECT: AFFILIATION OF KITCHENER WATERLOO PREDATORS VOLLEYBALL CLUB RECOMMENDATION: That the Kitchener Waterloo Predators Volleyball Club be approved as an affiliated minor sport group with the City of Kitchener, per the City's Minor Sport Affiliation policy; and That the Kitchener Waterloo Predators Volleyball Club be added as an insured group to the City of Kitchener's Minor Sports third party liability insurance program. BACKGROUND: The Kitchener Waterloo Predators Volleyball Club has applied to the Athletics Section to become an affiliated minor sport group and to be added to the City's Minor Sport Third Party Liability Insurance policy. Through affiliation the club's goal is to continue with its development as a sustainable community organization that can continue to provide quality volleyball programs for many generations of volunteers and participants. REPORT: Created in 2007 the Kitchener Waterloo Predators Volleyball Club is an incorporated not-for- profit volunteer organization whose goal is to establish itself as one of the top clubs in the province. The Club is governed by a dedicated volunteer board of directors adhering to the principles laid out in their club bylaws and they meet all the requirements of affiliation. The Club offers a variety of programs for both girls and boys that include introductory programs, recreational house league and competitive teams with both indoor and beach volleyball options. The club operates out of elementary and secondary school gyms for their indoor programs and will be utilizing the McLennan Park beach volleyball pits for the growing beach volleyball program. The Club currently has 537 registered athletes of which 237 are Kitchener residents. The programs are offered to individuals who range in age from 5 to 18 years, but their objective is to create a life long passion and enjoyment of the sport in their athletes. 1- 1 The Kitchener Waterloo Predators Volleyball Club expects to also pursue affiliation with the City of Waterloo within the coming year. ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN: Community Priority: Quality of Life - "ensure that Kitchener achieves and sustains its vision of broad community health and well being." Foundation: Efficient and Effective Government Goal: Public Sector Leadership "To position the municipality as a leader in public sector policy, processes and systems." FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: None COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: The City of Kitchener will have 42 Minor Sport affiliated groups with the addition of this Volleyball club. Each of the organizations are actively engaged and supported through our CSD resources and Athletic section staff.
