The Cycling Advisory Committee, re-established in 2009, has been determining how to support
the implementation of the Cycling Master Plan as well as the expectations of Council with
regards to the Committee and cycling in Kitchener.
Committee members met in December 2011 with the Mayor and virtually all Councillors, either
in small groups or individually to engage in discussion on cycling in the Community, and the role
of the Committee in communicating with Council and expectations in promoting cycling. A
Councillor survey was included as part of the meetings.
Councillors offered a variety of expectations and opinions and indicated that the Committee's
primary role with Council is as the advocate for cycling. Further, when asked how often the
Committee should provide direct input to Council, twice annually was indicated by most.
Councillors were further asked the most effective way for the Cycling Advisory Committee to
communicate with Council. The majority indicated that presentations directly by Committee
members are the most effective way.
The presentation by the Committee will outline the outcomes of the Councillor interviews,
Committee accomplishments and suggested priorities for 2012.

Finally, the Committee asked the participating Councilors if they would be interested and willing
to participate in a bicycle ride to show City streets, trails, and other facilities from the viewpoint
of a cyclist. The overwhelming majority indicated that they would be very interested in
participating. The Committee will be organizing a short, easy, ride for the Mayor and Members
of Council showing accomplishments, needs and safety and comfort issues for cyclists.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
None at this time
COMMUNICATIONS:
As stated previously the Committee has met with the Mayor and almost all members of Council.
Infrastructure Services Staff were consulted and have been working with the Committee and are
incorporating the identified projects into their 2012 work plans.
Committee members will work with staff at the Councillors Office in establishing a date and time
suitable to all for the ride with Council in late May, 2012.
The Committee intends to report back to Council at the end of 2012 and provide an update on
the implementation of various initiatives related to cycling within the Community relevant to the
Cycling Advisory Committee and Council.
