BACKGROUND: The Cycling Advisory Committee, in determining goals for Kitchener for 2012, met with the majority of members of presentation to the Community and Infrastructure Service meetings. REPORT: the Committee and for cycling in Council in December 2011. This s Committee is a result of these The Cycling Advisory Committee, re-established in 2009, has been determining how to support the implementation of the Cycling Master Plan as well as the expectations of Council with regards to the Committee and cycling in Kitchener. Committee members met in December 2011 with the Mayor and virtually all Councillors, either in small groups or individually to engage in discussion on cycling in the Community, and the role of the Committee in communicating with Council and expectations in promoting cycling. A Councillor survey was included as part of the meetings. Councillors offered a variety of expectations and opinions and indicated that the Committee's primary role with Council is as the advocate for cycling. Further, when asked how often the Committee should provide direct input to Council, twice annually was indicated by most. Councillors were further asked the most effective way for the Cycling Advisory Committee to communicate with Council. The majority indicated that presentations directly by Committee members are the most effective way. The presentation by the Committee will outline the outcomes of the Councillor interviews, Committee accomplishments and suggested priorities for 2012. 6-1 Staff Re~p~r~ ~ITCH~14?E~ 1lI~CQStrllfl?'UC~ Se!'VICES fl~p~Cfl?1~11~ www.kitthenerca Finally, the Committee asked the participating Councilors if they would be interested and willing to participate in a bicycle ride to show City streets, trails, and other facilities from the viewpoint of a cyclist. The overwhelming majority indicated that they would be very interested in participating. The Committee will be organizing a short, easy, ride for the Mayor and Members of Council showing accomplishments, needs and safety and comfort issues for cyclists. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: None at this time COMMUNICATIONS: As stated previously the Committee has met with the Mayor and almost all members of Council. Infrastructure Services Staff were consulted and have been working with the Committee and are incorporating the identified projects into their 2012 work plans. Committee members will work with staff at the Councillors Office in establishing a date and time suitable to all for the ride with Council in late May, 2012. The Committee intends to report back to Council at the end of 2012 and provide an update on the implementation of various initiatives related to cycling within the Community relevant to the Cycling Advisory Committee and Council.
