DOWNTOWN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
March 22, 2012 City of Kitchener
The Downtown Advisory Committee met this date, Chaired by Mark Garner with
the following members in attendance: Councillor Dan Glenn-Graham , Alan
Doherty, Cameron Dearlove, Cory Grossman, David Bishop, Glenn Scheels, Lisa
Polonoski, Aaron MacFarlane, Jamie Yantzi, Tania Benninger, Joe Stock and
Erin Young
City staff in attendance:
Cory Bluhm, Monika Grau, Sandy Curzon and Hilary
Abel.
1. Discussion Items
Sub-Committee Working Groups
In 2009 & 2010 focus groups were formed to address specific issues that
members felt required in-depth discussion. Over this two year period, these
working groups consisted of a Landlord Working Group; Terms of Reference
Review; Downtown Strategic Plan Update Review; Residential Design Brief;
Small Business Support Program and Downtown Tours.
In 2011 DAC focused their attention on the creation of a new Downtown Strategic
Plan. Now that the Downtown Action Plan has been approved by City Council,
DAC members have chosen the following focus groups and volunteered to
represent them as follows:

The working groups will meet along with a City staff facilitator during the monthly

DAC meetings and deliver their presentations on October 25.

3. Committee Updates
Economic Downtown Advisory Committee - No update
Safe & Healthy Committee - No update
Arts & Culture Committee - ACAC discussed how Arts & Culture can be
embedded into the Offical Plan with respect to venue options such as studios;
rehearsal and mixed use spaces; developing a technology and arts community.
4. New Business:

The City of Kitchener Advisory Committees are invited March 31 from 9am-
11am @ 120 Duke St.W. to talk about the role of each Committee. Councillor
Glenn-Graham advised that there will be discussion around the Local
Environmental Action Fund (LEAF) surplus fund ($2.3mil) developed to improve
the environment, and enhance sustainability into the future.
Glenn Scheels suggested the rehabilitation of public spaces and identified
remnant park spaces such as Vogels Green at Queen & Duke.
