HomeMy WebLinkAboutINS-12-051 - On-Street Parking Regulations - The Country WayREPORT TO:Community and Infrastructure Services Committee DATE OF MEETING: June 18, 2012 SUBMITTED BY: John McBride, Director of Transportation Services PREPARED BY: Danny Pimentel, Traffic Technologist (741-2371) WARD(S) INVOLVED: Ward 6 DATE OF REPORT: June 6, 2012 REPORT NO.: INS-12-051 SUBJECT: ON-STREET PARKING REGULATIONS – THE COUNTRY WAY RECOMMENDATIONS: That parking be prohibited at any time on the inner curve (odd house number side) of The Country Way from a point 125 metres west of Old Country Drive to a point 41 metres west thereof, and further; That the Uniform Traffic By-law be amended accordingly. BACKGROUND: Transportation Services had received a request to review the existing on-street parking regulations on The Country Way. The request cited concerns of vehicles parking along the inner curve near 65 The Country Way, thereby obstructing sightlines when residents are attempting to access their properties. The request also cited difficulties in traversing the curved roadway, due to the narrowing of the effective roadway width, with vehicles parked along the inner curve. REPORT: At the present time, on-street parking is permitted on both sides of The Country Way between Old Country Drive and Settlers Drive for a maximum period of three (3) consecutive hours, as outlined in the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2007-138. In order to address this request, Transportation Services sent a notification letter to the nineteen (19) affected residents, regarding a proposal to prohibit on-street parking along the inner curve of the roadway, in the area of 65 The Country Way. City staff met with a resident over the proposed length of the parking prohibition and their desire to maintain some parking in front of their residence. A comprise was made that satisfied both parties while still maintaining the prohibition on the curved section of the roadway. ì ó ï ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN: This initiative falls under the Community Priority of Quality of Life. “Work with partners, including all orders of government, to create a culture of safety in our community.” By working with the neighbourhood, on-street parking concerns have been addressed. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The approximate cost for sign installation for the roadway is $200 and will be taken from the existing sign maintenance budget. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: In May 2012, affected residents along The Country Way, in the area of 65, were notified regarding the proposed parking changes. There concerns have been incorporated in this report. ACKNOWLEDGED BY: Pauline Houston, Deputy CAO Infrastructure Services Department ì ó î Proposed Parking Prohibition The Country Way ì ó í
