May 2012 - ACAC Minutes 2
5.0 Music Cluster update: Silvia DiDonato
• Working title: “Music Works”
Context:
• Music is an economic engine, it attracts talent, drives innovation and enriches community
(evidence provided demonstrating positive financial impact).
• Music sector has shifted from traditional recording industry, which is no longer the major
economic stream. Instead, new opportunities are emerging for artists to earn a living,
including on-line tools (internet, mobile devices, concerts, live music).
• Considering new opportunities, music industry is growing.
Where might this project go?
o Possibilities include creation of a task force, incentives, guidebook on audio and lighting
for potential music venues, music accelerator centre, music business incubator,
centralized resources for musicians, web tools…
o The City needn’t take the lead on all solutions; other groups/organizations must be
involved.
Upcoming activities:
• Stakeholder roundtable consultation session to take place mid to late June. 100 people from
various industries to participate.
• Tables will consider subsets of three broad areas for a fixed period of time:
o Audience
o Business of Music
o Commercial live music venues
ACAC discussion/suggestions:
• Use facilitators to direct table conversations.
• Ask registrants in advance of session reasons people don’t attend concerts. Then use top
reasons as topics participants address at their tables.
• Acknowledge that audiences’ needs must be understood so that musical product offerings
can respond to what audiences seek. i.e., loud bar venues will not appeal to audiences that
value conversation with friends when making decisions about how to spend their time and
money.
• Invite audience members to session, not exclusively industry reps. It is important to
understand what audiences seek.
• Consider that the right mix of place, product and price are required to attract audiences.
Suggested table topics:
• ‘Content creation’ deserves its own table. The need for content creators influences all three
areas of focus.
• How to address the need for a centralized listing for concert events.
• How to address the competitive nature of the industry that resists collaboration out of fear
of jeopardizing their specific audiences.
