The Downtown Advisory Committee met. this date, Chaired by Mark Garner with
the following members in attendance: Councillor Frank Etherington, Cory
Grossman, Amino Gifani, Michael Falcone, Jaime Yantzi, Lawrence McNaught,
Scheels, Aaron MacFarlane
The following members were absent: Bryan Larkin, Don Zehr

DeVille
Discussion items
On motion by Jaime Yantzi, seconded by Lawrence McNaught, the minutes of
January 2011 were approved.
Lisa provided an update on the Economic Development Advisory committee
Mark provided an update on the safie and healthy advisory committee
Aaron MacFarlane Arts & Culture update was provided
2.1 Economic Development Orientation
Rod Regier provided the committee wi#h an overview of Economic Development
and haw the downtown fits into the structure.
He provided a history of economic development in Kitchener, how external
markets have affected our local market and where we are headed moving
forward.
Future tours that will be provided to the Committee:
- City Centre Sales Office
- Communitech Hub
- Breighaupt Block
The Committee was informed that the Economic Development Strategic Plan will
be reviewed this year and it will be brought forward to DAC before going to
Council in June. The committee was also informed that once the Region has
made a decision on rapid transit, plans for the remainder of downtown can begin
(parking, resurfacing side streets etc). The Committee was also provided with an
overview of the Brownfield program.
There was a concern raised regarding budget talks and how cuts can affect
#hings such as Victoria Park.
2.2 BIA Orientation
Mark Garner showed the committee a YouTube video providing a history of BIAs.

He explaihed who the board is and what types of things they have been involved
in. Mark provided the committee with a copy of their annual report. This report
provided the committee with an overview of the Kitchener BIA activities and
involvement.
He advised there role also is a large advocate for the members, they work to get
partnerships they are working on cross pollination. He noted that since the City
has completed the work on the streetscape, the BIA is now prepared to promote
the downtown to a larger extent.
