HomeMy WebLinkAboutDAC 2011-11-10DOWNTOWN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES November 10 201'1 Ci ofi Kitclhener The Downtown Advisory Committee mef this date, Chaired by Mark Garner with the following members in attendance: Cameron Deerlove, Alan Doherty, Lisa Polonoski, Michael Falcone, Amina Gilani, Lawrence McNaught, Don Zehr The following members were absent: Glenn Scheels, Tania Benninger, CounciElor Frank Etherington, Councillor Dan Glenn-Graham, Aaron MacFarlane and Dave Gerencer Staff in attendance: Cory Bluhm, Kim Feere, Tracey DeVille, Sandy Curzon A royal of Minutes On motion by The October Downtown Advisory Committee minutes were approved. Committee U dates Economic Devela ment Adviso Committee EDAC Lisa Polonoski advised that EDAC was provided with the same presentation as DAC was. Safe and Health Adviso Committee SNAC Mark Garner advised that the SNAC discussed their budget allocations. He also advised that there will be a new process for requesting grant money as well that the grant funding that has been provided to the BIA for graffiti removal may not be required in the future. Arts and Culture Adviso Committee ACAC No update available Discussion Items 2.1 2012 Meeting Dates Cory Bluhm asked the Committee for their feedback on adjusting the meeting date to the #ourth week of the month The Committee agreed that a change to allow for greater information sharing would be beneficial. Tracey DeViile advised that she will send out a new meeting schedule. 2.2 Downtown Strategic Plan {Small Group Discussion) Cory Bluhm provided background on what downtown looked like 10 years ago and noted the number of new assets in the downtown and asked the committee to discuss how we moue forward to continue on the momentum of what is going on. The Committee members then split into small discussion groups. 2.3 Downtown S#rategic Plan {Full Committee Discussion) Committee members had a fiull committee discussion on what ideas they came up with during their small group discussions. The top three ideas from each group were: Group One Top 3 restaurants missing from downtown 1. Greek 2. Indian 3. Italian - not a chain What 3 stores are missing? 1. shoe store 2. grocery store 3. multi gender store (H&M) If you could do 3 improvements what would they be? 1. more retail 2. movie theatre 3. more events Top 3 amenities missing 1. entertainment /nightlife 2. clus#er of services -- restaurants and shopping together 3. grocery store If you could do one thing to enhance King Street 1. social services relocation Group Two Top 2 restaurants missing from downtown 1. modern causal dining 2. borealis 3. local brew pub Top 3 stores missing from downtown 1. shoe store 2. high end men and women's clothing Top 3 improvements 1. create a Dundas Square environment on Civic Square 2. retail store that are more inviting 3. more pedestrian traffic Top 3 amenities missing ~ - 1. grocery stare 1 deli to go 2. entertainment -~ dining, movies, skating rink 3. flagship stores Group Three Restaurants 1. Wildcraft 2. Martinis 3. quiet and quaint beer market stores 1. golf town 2. shoe store 3. clothing improve king street 1. no smoking on patios 2. better advertising and promotion 3. more Mayfair type projects Missing 1. movie theatre - Imax 2. specialty foods -- butcher 1 veggies 3. big LCBO The committee then had a brief round table discussion about wha# stuck out most for them. - getting rid of panhandlers and make the walking experience flawless - more activity on all levels to create more action - grocery store - more people engaged, like this group - Dundas square type place at Civic Square, more to attract and bring city halt square to life -put something cool in the empty space -tie together special - specialty food - vibrancy adding more business, events restaurants - night life Cory Bluhm advised they will summarize the data of the next month and will bring this back to the committee in December with the results to have a discussion on the next steps. Meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
