Class, M. Arges, P. Dedes, S. Burek, B. Laube, Y. Fernandes Staff: R. Schirm (Committee Administrator), J. Joseph (Minutes), W. Sleeth, Mark Parris Regrets: Ms. J. Romero, B. Forwell Guests: P. Walberg, T. Pender, J. Gazzola 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF April 10, 2012 That the minutes of the April 10, 2012 meeting be approved. Motion by: P. Dedes Seconded by: Y. Fernandes 2. BECHTEL DRIVE TRAIL CROSSING R. Schirm provided an update to the committee regarding the alignment of the Bechtel Drive Trail Crossing and stated that modifying the alignment of the gutter would have been at a significant cost. R. Schirm said that staff members K. Carmichael and W. Sleeth would meet to discuss this alignment in further detail. Y. Fernandes requested to be copied on all correspondence given she is the Councillor of that ward area. 3. COUNCILOR'S RIDE M. Arges stated that construction on Mill Street and the Iron Horse Trail Crossing at Courtland and Stirling may disrupt the Councilor's ride. R. Schirm stated that he would check with the project managers to determine whether these portions of the route would be accessible in time for the ride. Y. Fernandes suggested that meet -up locations with specified times be identified along the route for the benefit of Councilor's who may be unable to make the ride's starting time. B. Laube suggested that a blackberry number be provided to allow Councilor's to contact committee members during the ride. Ms. M. Sehl inquired about how the ride would be publicized. R. Schirm replied stating that a media release would be distributed. The committee members discussed who would speak at each stopping point along the route. This information is identified below. Class Victoria Park Rail Crossing: P. Dedes Trails and the connectivity they provide: M. Arges Tannery: M. Sehl Ottawa Street as a barrier to cyclists: The committee member leading the ride. R. Schirm requested that the above committee members send their talking points to staff by May 15th for review prior to the ride. M. Arges asked when the committee should meet for the ride, and R. Schirm replied with a 9:45am meeting time in front of City Hall. Y. Fernandes suggested that a reflective vest be worn by those leading and tailing the ride, and R. Schirm stated he would provide the vests. 4. THE GREAT COMMUTER RACE J. Joseph informed the committee that three invitations were distributed to Jeff Allen, Ross Hull, and Jeff Outhit. J. Outhit confirmed his participation as the cyclist, R. Hull stated he must check his availability, and J. Allen stated he would try to find another participant from 570news. R. Schirm confirmed that a Toyota Prius would be provided by N. Mehes for the race. Y. Fernandes stated that she would like to participate as the cyclist, and D. Class suggested that a -bikes also be included in the race. It was also discussed that Regional Councillors should be invited to participate given the regional mandate of Grand River Transit. 5. GUEST SPEAKER FROM THE EMBASSY OF THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS J. Joseph informed the committee that Hans Moor, from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, would be featured as a guest speaker during the Commuter Challenge Kick -off event, tentatively scheduled for June 4th from 4:30 — 6:30pm. J. Joseph stated that the event would also feature a presentation on the committee's top 5 priorities for 2012, a public consultation centre on the Region of Waterloo's Active Transportation Master Plan, and information on TravelWise. The event is scheduled to be held at the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy building. 6. REVIEWING APPLICATIONS FOR NEW CAC MEMBERS Two applications to join the Cycling Advisory Committee were submitted. Committee members reviewed and discussed the applications in camera, and made the following motions: CYCLING ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES May 8, 2012 CITY OF KITCHENER MOTION: To recommend to Council that the individual who submitted the first application become a member of the Cycling Advisory Committee. Motioned by: Mr. P. Dedes Seconded by: Mr. B. Laube Motion carries. MOTION: To recommend to Council that the individual who submitted the second application become a member of the Cycling Advisory Committee. Motioned by: Mr. D. Class Seconded by: Mr. M. Arges Motion carries. 8. ADJOURNMENT That the meeting be adjourned at 6:03 p.m. Motioned by: Mr. P. Dedes Seconded by: Mr. M. Arges
