DELEGATION 3.0 Kitchener Youth Services Strategy: Dannon Vasey • Youth Services Strategy recently launched. Sets vision, direction and mandate for the provision of youth services over the next 10 years. • Youth, young adults, parents, neighbourhood groups, staff and Council were consulted. • The strategy: o Outlines how programs and services will be delivered; o Provides recommendations regarding areas for future attention, resource allocation, community agencies to work with, and programs and services to deliver. Key area: Youth ‘at risk’. • Mandate: to provide inclusive and meaningful opportunities for youth participation in community life through access to resources, recreation, leadership development, and civic engagement. • Goals: o Accessible, affordable community based programs that address barriers to participation (including cost, transportation, over-scheduling…). o Information, knowledge, resources and training for staff (on how to best serve young people). o Improved communication with youth (so that programs and opportunities for youth to get involved are promoted in ways to best reach target audiences). o A youth friendly Kitchener (ensure civic engagement and connectedness). • Staff training piece has been completed. • Identified gaps in services: engaging female populations, reaching cultural and ethnic groups. • Kitchener Youth Action Council (an advisory committee) is just one opportunity to engage youth. Youth Services department is now looking at new ways to engage youth. Youth surveyed indicated that through participating in arts activities is one way they might like to get involved. • ACAC comments: o ACAC sees opportunities for collaborating with Youth Services regarding ways to engage with youth through the arts. ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES JUNE 19, 2012 CITY OF KITCHENER June 2012 - ACAC Minutes 2 o Engaging young people in the arts is critical for audience development, which is very important for the health of our local arts community. o Engaging young people in the arts could also help address the ‘Content Creator’ gap the local digital media cluster is experiencing. o Economic Development Advisory Committee could also benefit from hearing this presentation about the Youth Services Strategy. o Community consultation will be an important part of any future cultural planning initiatives. KYAC should be consulted, and could assist in disseminating surveys or engaging young people in the cultural planning process. ACTION: Youth Services Staff to provide full report on Youth Strategy to committee. ACTION: Youth Engagement/Audience Development/Cultural Tourism subcommittee (Sarry Zheng, Cheryl Ewing, Catherine Mombourquette) to explore how the work of the Youth Services department and KYAC might be a source of input for any initiatives undertaken by this subcommittee, potentially starting in September. INFORMATION ITEMS 4.0 Outcome: ACAC Work Plan Update to FCSC: Silvia DiDonato • Report was accepted by Council without comment. • When working on any of the initiatives identified in the report, staff and ACAC can refer to the accepted report to remind Council of its earlier support. • Report findings and recommendations should be incorporated into future culture plan. • Report will help inform the committee’s agenda for the next term. 5.0 Creative Communities Prosperity Fund (CCPF)Application: Silvia DiDonato • Provincial government has not yet announced this cycle’s funding. • Staff is reviewing CCPF requirements and preparing for the announcement. • Upcoming action items for staff: o Meet with Creative Enterprise Initiative to discuss cultural mapping. o Explore a project proposal that can take advantage of the momentum of a number of emerging projects, initiatives, and recognized needs (music cluster, ACAC’s report to Council, content creator gap). o Explore opportunities to collaborate with other organizations, as the application process favours collaborative projects. ACTION: Mark Derro to inquire about KW Community Foundation grants and report to Silvia offline. 6.0 Music Cluster update: Silvia DiDonato • Launch team met. • Stakeholder workshop tentatively set for July 19. Purpose: generate ideas for concrete actions to facilitate a music cluster. • Launch team’s role: generate table topics for discussion at workshop. Provide names of potential workshop invitees (delegates), review ideas generated following the workshop. • Goal: report to Council in the fall. ACTION: ACAC members to email Silvia contact information on delegates to invite to workshop. Include name, email address, role or relationship to music community. 7.0 Public Art Working Group Report: Sean Puckett • Hilary Abel attended meeting to provide an update on current strategies to find art content for the Cube. • Jefferson Campbell-Cooper, 2012 Artist in Residence, is planning for several events. Contains all 1080 portraits. • PAWG is exploring the idea of art exhibits in Community Centres. 8.0 Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report • No report in Aaron’s absence. 9.0 Council Report: Kelly Galloway • Transportation Master Plan going to the public for comment. Pedestrians are primary, cyclists are secondary, and the automobile is tertiary. • Boathouse lease is complete. • Interim financial statements show a slight deficit. • Jeff Wilmer, former deputy CAO is new CAO. • A business centre of excellence has been established to make us more accountable for our strategic plan. • Centennial celebration on June 10 was a success. Everyone is invited to participate in the longest picnic on July 15. 10.0 Members’ Updates • Staff: Artist Larry Hunter’s mural, “Suddenly it’s 1957!” was installed in Belmont Village on June 18. Belmont BIA will hold a celebration on August 25. ADJOURNMENT The chair adjourned the meeting at 5:10 pm NEXT MEETING Date September 18, 2012, 4:00 p.m., Conestoga Room.
