Prepared by: Christina Pflug June 2000 VILLAGE OF BRIDGEPORT fonds. - 1848-1972. - 2.40 m of textual records, 10 cm maps/plans, 2 artifacts, 10 cm maps/plan, and microfilm. The community of Bridgeport has a history that dates from the early nineteenth century. Although the area was initially settled in 1807 with the arrival of the first settler, Peter Erb, from Pennsylvania, Jacob Shoemaker is recognized as the official founder of the village. Sometime between 1827 and 1828 Jacob Shoemaker purchased Lot 59 from the German Company Tract where he eventually established agrist-mill and asaw-mill. The community founded by Shoemaker was situated on the west side of the Grand River and was known throughout the years as Shoemaker's Mills, Glasgow, and Lancaster. On the eastern bank of the Grand River, John U. Tyson established another community. Although he called his settlement Bridgeport, by 1851 both communities were known as Bridgeport. Initially, the two communities were connected by a two-span wooden bridge. However, in 1897 it was replaced by a steel bridge. In 1934 a concrete bridge was constructed which required the removal of part of an island in the Grand River. The west side of Bridgeport had many thriving industries; for example, there was agrist-mill, a cooper shop, woollen mills, and acider-mill. Until 1852, Bridgeport was larger and had more industries than the neighbouring village of Berlin. This changed in 1852 when the Grand Trunk Railway constructed a railroad through Berlin, which subsequently resulted in an increase in Berlin's population and industry and a decline in the number of businesses located in Bridgeport. In 1947 the Board of Health became the Council of Health. During the 1950s Bridgeport contracted with the City of Kitchener to provide various municipal services. As one example, Kitchener provided fire protection for the period 1953-1962, after which Bridgeport opted to establish its won volunteer fire department. By the late 1960s the provincial government was investigating the possible restructuring of municipal governments to address the trend toward urbanization. This led to the proposal for regional government, which necessitated the restructuring of large portions of municipalities, and ultimately resulted in the alteration of many territorial boundaries and the incorporation of numerous smaller communities into larger municipalities. In addition to the village of Bridgeport, many small towns and villages became part of either Kitchener or Waterloo. Although there was considerable debate as to which city Bridgeport would merge with, it was eventually determined on technical grounds (including the degree of infrastructure integration) that Bridgeport would become part of Kitchener as of January 1, 1973. The fonds consist of nine series, which comprise minutes of various boards and councils, by-laws, deeds and agreements, financial records and artifacts. A considerable number of subject files and financial records are also included which provide detailed information regarding the daily functioning of the Village in the middle of the twentieth century. The subject files are divided into two sub-series both of which contain correspondence, plans, maps, and newspaper clippings. The first sub-series appear to have been arranged in alphabetical order, however this was done inconsistently and an attempt has been made to reconstruct the original alphabetical order. The second sub- series appear to consist of several files that were combined while being microfilmed in 1984. This artificial arrangement has been maintained.
