KITCHENER DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION CENTRE fonds.-1937-1990.-65 cm of
textual records.
In April 1987 City Council approved the construction of the Downtown
Transportation Centre with an estimated cost of $5,383,500.00. The new terminal,
which was built on the block, bounded by Charles, Ontario, Joseph, and Gaukel Streets,
replaced the existing terminal located on Duke Street. Although the primary objective in
constructing a new Transportation Terminal was to provide a facility that could meet the
increasing transportation demands of the community, it was also part of an attempt to
revitalize the downtown area. While the Duke Street Terminal accommodated 17
buses, the new Terminal had enough space for 20 Kitchener Transit buses. The
Transportation Centre, in conjunction with Gray Coach Lines, also provided passengers
with inter-city bus travel. The Centre was designed to accommodate up to 8 inter-urban
buses. It was believed that the size of the Transportation Terminal would easily
accommodate future growth and meet public transportation demands. The construction
of the Downtown Transportation Centre was also part of an effort to bring revitalization
to Kitchener's core. It was recognized that the provision of excellent public
transportation was an integral part in the growth and development of the Downtown and
thereby provided further justification for the replacement of the existing Duke Street
Terminal.
The building was designed by Lingwood-Dupej Architects and Associates of
Kitchener. The construction contract was awarded to Ellis-Don Limited. The structural
consultant for the project was Sze Straka Engineers Limited of Waterloo and the
mechanical and electrical consultants were Chorley and Bisset Limited of London,
Ontario. Construction of the Downtown Transportation Centre commenced in 1987 and
the building was completed in October 1988. The grand opening of the new building
was held on October 14, 1988 and full operation of the Centre began on October 17,
1988.
Kitchener Transit merged with Cambridge Transit in 2000 and it is now known as Grand
River Transit (GRT) and run by the Region of Waterloo.
