Home My WebLink AboutDowntown RevitalizationCity of Kitchener Corporate Archives Downtown Revitalization fonds Prepared by: Hilda Sturm February 2010 DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION fonds - 1940 - 2012. -100 cm of textual records, 15 cm of plans/maps/blueprints and 40cm of photographs. The revitalization of the Kitchener downtown has been an ongoing project for the city. Stores, businesses and residents have come and gone over the years. The downtown has fallen on hard times over the years and staff and council have been trying to rebuild a thriving downtown again. In the 1960's as changes were taking place in the industrial area on the fringes of downtown Kitchener, a brochure was put together to find buyers for the industrial buildings. During the 1950's, 60's and 70's the downtown was at its peak with stores such as Goudie's, Budd's and the King Centre Mall and Market Square. In the 1980's streetscapes design improvements were implemented for the side streets off King St. New lighting, phone booths, furniture, and paving changes were made. Also in the 1980's Kitchener Transit was looking at a new passenger terminal. Surveys were taken for passenger counts, bus stop locations, routes, statistics etc. and results were tabulated and terminal options were surveyed. When the new terminal was opened in 1988 there were the good and of course the bad comments. The out of town buses departed from this terminal as well. In the 21St century the downtown is trying to rebuild and attract new businesses. King St. has been made over to attract special events and sidewalks have been widened. Buildings are being renovated such as the library and older buildings are being converted to condominiums such as Kaufman's and Arrow. Other buildings are being converted to office space or schools such as the Lang building, Aikman & Collins and St. Jerome's to Wilfred Laurier University. New buildings have been built, such as the University of Waterloo medical school and a new market. Anew parking garage was been completed and a new LRT station is scheduled to be built by the Region. The fonds consists of newspaper articles, plans, maps, blueprints and photographs. The records consist of three series and the documents are arranged in chronological order within each series. Title based on contents of fonds. An index is available in Appendix B. 3: Photographs/Slides/Negatives - 1950-2002. 40cm. This series consists of the photographs of the downtown area, pre and post redevelopment. An index is available in Appendix C.
