HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommunity Programs and ServicesCity of Kitchener Corporate Archives Community Programs and Services fonds 1956-2012 Prepared by: Hilda Sturm June 2011 COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AND SERVICES fonds - 1956-2012. - 2.5 m of textual records, 30 cm of videos, 5 cm of artifacts and 30 cm of photographs. Community Programs and Services (division of Community Services Department, formerly Parks and Recreation Department) provide community-based programming for the residents of the City of Kitchener while being responsive to the diverse needs of all residents. The division is responsible for older adult and community centres, neighbourhood associations, older adult services, arts and culture, inclusion services, summer playgrounds, winter rinks, youth leadership and youth services, volunteer management, indoor and outdoor pools, aquatic programs, Kiwanis Park and minor sports groups. One of the programs that ran from 1989 - 1997 was the Outreach Theatre/Looking Glass Theatre available for children. This program was a joint venture between Kitchener Parks and Recreation and the Waterloo Regional Arts Council for children between the ages of 8 -11. The major focuses of the program were theatre, arts, dance and music. The program helped children expand their imagination and creativity and develop their talent and skills in story telling, making sets and costumes, dancing, singing. The program was meant to help develop children's interest in drama and theatre with emphasis on fun and the opportunity to develop their confidence and social skills, co-operation with peers, public speaking, language and memory skills, leadership development, team building skills. City of Kitchener publishes a variety of magazines and newsletters for citizens containing information on programs and the many services offered. One of the magazines published is the Leisure magazine which is published 3-4 times a year and includes all programs that the city offers at the pools and community centres. Over the years various newsletters have been available such as Frankly Speaking and Profile. The City of Kitchener has four indoor pools - Breithaupt, Cameron Heights, Forest Heights and Lyle S. Hallman. As well there are three outdoor pools -Harry Class, Idlewood and Wilson. There are thirteen Community Centres -Bridgeport, Centreville Chicopee, Chandler Mowat, Country Hills, Doon Pioneer Park, Downtown Centre, Forest Heights, Kingsdale, Mill Courtland, Rockway Centre, Stanley Park, Victoria Hills, and Williamsburg. The fonds consists of brochures, correspondence, magazines, reports, maps, drawings, artifacts and ephemera. Other items are photographs and video cassettes. The records consist of seven series and the documents are arranged in chronological order within each series. Title based on contents of fonds. Records transferred from Records Centre and staff. 1. Publications - 1977 - 2012. 130cm This series consists of the Leisure magazines and various newsletters published by the City of Kitchener Community Services Department An index is available in Appendix A 2. Videos -1989-1994. 30cm This series consists of video cassette tapes. An index is available in Appendix B 3. Correspondence 1972-2009. - 30cm This series consist of programs, evaluation forms, manuals, textual documentation, background information and newspaper articles. An index is available in Appendix C. 4. Reports -1968-2007. 20cm This series consists of reports from various programs and services including annual reports. An index is available in Appendix D. 5. Artifacts 1988-2008. - 5cm This series consists of ephemera such as volunteer pins and plaques. An index is available in Appendix E. 6. Ephemera - 1988-2012. - 20cm This series consists of flyers, note pads, calendars, brochures and posters. An index is available in Appendix F. 7. Photographs/Negatives/Drawings/Maps/Plans - 1962-2008. 42cm This series consists of photographs of various programs at community centres and playgrounds. An index is available in Appendix G.
