Cycling Advisory Committee Annual Update
For information purposes only.
BACKGROUND:
The Kitchener Cycling Advisory Committee (KCAC) provides advice to council and staff on the
design, development and delivery of bicycle policies, programs and facilities to promote and
enhance cycling in the city.
In 2011, it was determined that the Kitchener Cycling Advisory Committee should provide an
annual update on the state of cycling in Kitchener through a presentation to Council. The
presentation by the committee will provide an update on the `Top 5 Cycling Priorities for 2012',
deliver the KCAC's first report card on cycling, and present the `Top 5 Cycling Priorities for
2013'.
REPORT:
The Cycling Advisory Committee, re-established in 2009, has been determining how to support
the implementation of the Cycling Master Plan as well as the expectations of Council with
regards to the Committee and cycling in Kitchener.
Committee members met in December 2011 with the Mayor and virtually all Councillors, either
in small groups or individually to engage in discussion on cycling in the Community, and the role
of the Committee in communicating with Council and expectations in promoting cycling.
Councillors offered a variety of expectations and opinions and indicated that the Committee's
primary role with Council is as the advocate for cycling. Further, when asked how often the
Committee should provide direct input to Council, twice annually was indicated by most.
Councillors were further asked the most effective way for the Cycling Advisory Committee to
communicate with Council. The majority indicated that presentations directly by Committee
members are the most effective way.
