4.0Recommended areas of focus for the next iteration of ACAC
Current ACACterm ends November 2012.
ACAC brainstormed issues that the new committee may wish to consider as areas of future
focus:
Continue addressing ACAC’s current four areas of focus. These came out of CulturePlan II
recommendations:
1.City’s role in arts and culture
2.Arts clusters/multiuse arts centre/facility
3.Convergence of arts/technology
4.Items to monitor: Youthengagement, audience development, cultural tourism
Item 1 (city’s role in arts and culture) is important to continue tracking. May involve
o
consideration of arts and culture uses for city facilities (i.e. community centres) for
exhibits, performances, rehearsals. May involve monitoring or advocating for the
development of a new culture plan.
Item 2 (multiuse arts centre) requires an understanding of the kind of space and facilities
o
needed. This level of research may exceed ACAC’s capacity. Future ACAC could consult
with CEI on facilities. Possible ACTION ITEM: Ensure regular updates to ACAC from the CEI
(related to item 2, above).
Item 3 (convergence of arts/technology) fits with “Music Works” the development of a
o
music cluster.
Item 4 (youth engagement). Possible ACTION ITEM: Invite EyeGo to the arts to present
on its current programming.

Item 4 (cultural tourism) needs attention. This is one strategy to attract/retain talent to
o
our city.
Suggestedpossible new areas of focus:
“Music Works”: the development of a music cluster in Kitchener. ACAC’s role could be to
o
actively monitor this community driven initiative. Could include a specialist committee
(or ACAC sub group) reporting to ACAC on this initiative.
Consider/investigate developing a ‘brand’for arts and culture. Possible partners: the
o
City, Waterloo Region Marketing and Tourism Corporation, the CEI, the BIA…(related to
item 4 above).
ACAC could benefit from having an appointment to Economic Development Advisory
o
Committee (EDAC) in addition to Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) and Public Art
Working Group (PAWG), as outlined in the committee’s terms of reference.
Explore how to collect information about the positive economic impact of special events
o
in our city (i.e. number of hotel rooms booked/restaurant meals ordered related to
specific events).
ACTION ITEM: ACAC members to continue developing recommendations of areas of focus for
discussion at next ACAC meeting
