DISCUSSION ITEMS 3.0Compass Kitchener All Committees Gathering Tuesday, November 27, 4:00 -6:00 pm, Kitchener City Hall, Conestoga Room Earl to attend and present ACAC’s milestones and achievements Will use ACAC’s report to Council on itswork plan achievements to inform his presentation, plus these additional points: The move of the Arts and Culture unit from Community Services Department to Economic o Development The work now underway on the music cluster o The proposed new ACAC subcommittee devoted to music (Music Working Group), o including members’names/positions toillustrate that ACAC is gathering the right people to put work on music-related initiatives. ACTION: staff to send report to Earl ACTION: Earl to attend on November 27 4.0Music Cluster Working Group:EarlMcCluskie On a motion made by Sean Puckett, seconded by Mark Derro: “That the existing informal music committee be recognized as a formal subcommittee of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee, devoted to music and modeled after the Public Art Working Group. MOTION CARRIED. Discussion: An informal music committee is already operating(currently focus: planning November 22 Music Works event). Once established, the new music working group could contribute to the development of its terms of reference. Formalizing the music working group will require a report to Council.However, the informal group can continue to operate until that time. ACTION: Staff to draft the report to council. 1 November 2012 -ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES NOVEMBER 20, 2012 CITY OF KITCHENER 5.0ACAC Terms of Reference The next iteration of ACAC should consider the following when reviewing the committee’s terms of reference: Does the recommended composition of the committee align with the committee’s goals o and objectives? Include mention of the soon-to-be formalized music working group in ACAC’s terms of o reference Include information about the city’s economic development strategy in the scope and o mandate sections of the terms document Suggest annual joint meetings with ACAC, Downtown Advisory Committee and Economic o Development Advisory Committee ACTION: Staff to include a review of ACAC’s terms of reference on the agenda for the new iteration of ACAC. 6.0Recommended areas of focus for the next iteration of ACAC Current ACAC term ends November 2012. ACAC made the following suggestions regarding areas of focus for the next iteration of ACAC, in addition to the list of suggested areas of focus developed at the last meeting: Support music clusterdevelopment o Consider the need for an ‘arts and culture’brand for the city o Encourage advisory committee cross appointmentswith EDAC and DAC o Investigate the collection of economic data about the impact of special events o Continue monitoring the city’s role in arts and culture, space needs, convergence of o arts/technology, youth engagement, audience development, cultural tourism Do not revisit research into a multiuse arts facility, as this topic requires attention o beyond the advisory committee’s scope. Monitor the space needs issue instead; watch the Creative Enterprise Initiative’s mapping project as a way to substantiate the need for space in our community. Role of the City: consider how the city could use its facilitate for arts and culture o purposes INFORMATION ITEMS 7.0Music Works update: Silvia DiDonato A second Music Works event willtake place on November 22 at the Victoria Park pavilion. The focuswill be to develop work plans for 10 suggested initiatives that would grow a Kitchener music cluster. 110 registrantsso far. The informal music committee is planning the event with staff. Earl and Mark of ACAC are involved. Conestoga College is providing in-kind support (volunteers, technical assistance). A CBC representative will be present. 8.0Public Art Working Group(PAWG)Report: Sean Puckett PAWG welcomed a new member. SanduSindileis trained as a curator. PAWG received a report about the suitability of various community centres as potential spots for community art galleries. Several centres identified as candidates for a pilot project. Staff to explore practicalities around resources and logistics. Public art project at Kitchener Operations Facility now in the installation phase. 2 November 2012 -ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES NOVEMBER 20, 2012 CITY OF KITCHENER 9.0Downtown Advisory Committee (DAC) Report: Aaron MacFarlane DAC recently reviewed the events that took place in the downtown over the past year. Also toured the digital ‘Cave’ at the Hub in the Tannery. Committee discussed the opportunity provided by the CBC’s move to the downtown. 10.0Council Report: KellyGalloway No report in Councillor Galloway’s absence. 11.0Members’ news Music Worksevent:takes place at the Victoria Park Pavilion on Thursday, November 22. Doors open at 3:30. ACAC members invited to sign up. EGG Tour:On Monday, November 5, ACAC members had the opportunity to visit Christie Digital to see the EGG (Edgeless Graphic Geometry).
