Earth Day Canada (EDC) was created in 1991 as a national, not-for-profit environmental charity that provides Canadians with an opportunity to make a difference where they live, work and spend their leisure hours. It reaches out to youth, community and environmental groups, schools, businesses, government departments and individuals across the county. On a global basis, Earth Day’s mandate is to create and nurture a popular, highly visible “window of awareness” in which individual awareness and actions are the primary goal. EDC coordinates and promotes Canada’s celebration of International Earth Day and in many communities the event has grown into Earth Week or Earth Month. EDC provides user-friendly interactive programs, an events calendar, print resources and a website. Earth Day is an excellent opportunity for the City to raise awareness of local environmental initiatives and concerns and to encourage residents to take action on a local level. Every spring, the City of Kitchener organizes a number of events throughout the month of April in celebration of Earth Day and to remind the community how important it is for all of us to protect our planet. The Environmental Committee hosted its first Environmental Showcase on April 19, 2012. The Environmental Showcase provided opportunities for citizens and committee members to learn, discuss, collaborate and become more involved. The Environmental Committee Earth Day Showcase liaisons will be responsible for the following: 1. In January staff will set-up a meeting (at a mutually convenient time) with the liaisons to provide relevant information for the planning and coordination of the event. 2. In January, liaisons will need to coordinate with the City’s Earth Day/Month Organizing Committee to … Ensure others don’t schedule and an event the same day/time o Ensure the event is included in any city wide advertising o 3. In February, liaisons will need to contact and confirm potential participants. Participants may include: Community Environmental Improvement Grant (CEIG) recipients o Local environmentally focused nonprofits or groups o University students and scholars o Businesses o 4. In March, liaisons will need to update advertising material and sent it to staff for production. Once the material is available it will be sent to the liaisons for distribution and/or staff will assist with distribution. 5. In March, liaisons will need to confirm with staff the layout of the space (the Rotunda and/or the Conestoga Room will be available for the event) and any special needs such as power cords or tables etc. relayed. 6. In March or April, liaisons will need to coordinate specific tasks (may involve other environmental committee members) such as greeting participants and attendees, room set-up and clean up or hosting the environmental committee’s display board etc. 7. On the evening of the event, the liaisons will be responsible for coordinating all tasks.
