REPORT:
The Community Services Department has received a travel assistance grant application from
the Heritage Green Blind Lawn Bowlers in the amount of $1,000 to attend the International Blind
Bowls Association World Championship in Worthing, England, from July 4 to 20, 2013. A copy
of the grant application is attached for reference. As indicated in the attached budget, the cost
for eight team members (four athletes and four coaches/directors) to attend the event is
approximately $28,800 which includes airfare, accommodations, transportation and meals.
Revenues to date are estimated at $7,800.
The City’s travel assistance grant applies to residents of the City of Kitchener, 18 years of age
or under, involved in non profit minor sports or cultural activities, who have qualified to compete
in sport championships or cultural events. Therefore, staff denied the grant request as it did not
meet the age criteria. The grant applicants are appealing the staff decision.
