DELEGATIONS: 3.01,000 Conversations about Community: Derek Alton, Tamarack: an institute for Community Engagement(a local charity) Tamarack is currently running a campaign to create a national dialogue on community. Goal:to engage groups across Canada in hour long conversationsabout their thoughts and experiences of community. From these conversations Tamarack hopes to learn where people are experiencing connection and identify opportunities for deeper and stronger experiences of community.Hope to reach the goal of 1,000 conversations over three years. Target audiences:youth, seniors, faith groups, community organizations, art groups. Groups that hold a conversation through the program will learn where people who use their services experiencethe greatest amount of connection and where they see opportunities for growth. This will assist in evaluatingprograms and resource distribution. There are guidelines available to facilitate conversations. Participants will also be plugged into a national conversation, providing access to: Insights from conversations across the country through the online learning community o ‘seekingcommunity.ca’ Monthly highlights o Quarterly analysis reports each with a specific focus o Derek invites ACAC members to contact him to share information about arts/culture groups that would be interested in having a conversation about community or that are already talking about community. Contact Derek Alton at derek@tamarackcommunity.ca 1 February 2013-ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES FEBRUARY 19, 2013 CITY OF KITCHENER DISCUSSION ITEMS 4.0Downtown Advisory Committee representative and Economic Development Advisory Committee representation As per the terms of reference, “to support the sharing of information and efficiencies, members may be invited to represent ACAC on Downtown Advisory Committee, Economic Development Advisory Committee [PAWG and other committees as required].” th DAC meets the 4Thursday, of every month from 4-6 th EDAC meets the 4Wednesday of every month from 12-2 D.Morton volunteers to be the ACAC rep to DAC. Mark Derro volunteersto be the ACAC rep to EDAC. Sarry Zheng is the second. ACTION: Staff to coordinate registration of these members for the cross-appointments. 5.0Terms of Reference Review: Silvia DiDonato The committeereviewed its Terms of Reference(Members have a copy of the terms in their committee binders). Mandate:ACAC fulfills an advisory role, providing advice and recommendations to Council on arts and culture matters to further the City’s strategic directions (quality of life, downtown vitality, leadership, diversity, community development, environment) Composition:twelve members include: one member of Council, one youth member (age 18- 30), two arts organization representatives, one arts educator, two practicing artists (any discipline), and five citizens at large who have an interest in the arts. Meetings:Members missing two consecutive meetings without explanation or valid reasons will be contacted for a confirmation of commitment. A quorum of this committee is six members. Meetings are open to the public. Members of the public may register with the committee secretary as a guest, or as a delegation. Specific projects may require the striking of ad hoc committees, or sub-committees, from time to time. Membership on sucha committee may be extended to community representatives and experts outside the committee’s membership. Reporting: Minutes are recorded by the committee secretary. Minutes are distributed to committee members and to Council. They are accessible to thepublic on the City’s internet site. Once every two years, the committee prepares a report for Council to communicate the activities of the two-year term. 6.0Committee work planning 2013/2014: Silvia DiDonato The work of the Arts and Culture fallsunder the umbrella of the Economic Development department. A five-pronged strategy guides the department’s work: 1.Startup City:Make Kitchener a good place for businessesto start. 2.Cluster building:Clusters can include educational institutions, supply chains, users, and related communities. They can overlap. The arts and culture cluster is a ‘triple threat’, art activities can contribute to the economy, attract talentand improve quality of life. . Examples of games. EA is seeking to build an art team around art direction here in Kitchener. 3.Downtown: make it a vibrant destination within the city 4.Talent:a vibrant city with a flourishing art scene attracts talent 5.Innovation District: ACAC’s work plan should involve further the above strategies. Committee meetings could be structured with a formal component from 4-5pm, then an informal break-out session for sub group activity from 5-6. 2 February 2013-ACAC Minutes ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ACAC) MINUTES FEBRUARY 19, 2013 CITY OF KITCHENER Possible list of suggested sub groups: Music Working Group o Arts and Youth o Arts and culture strategydevelopment o Digital media content creators o Live theatre cluster o Special events collaboration o Building connections with the Creative Enterprise Initiative (CEI) o Culture-Plan—connect to Waterloo(they are currently working on a culture plan) o Reporting to demonstrate the economic impact of arts activities and facilities. o Music Working Group will be one sub group. Committee can select three others based on priorities. Once a subgroup has completed its mandate, another can be struck. Committee brainstormed the following subgroups: 1.Music Working Group 2.Building connections with CEI 3.Reporting to demonstrate economic impact of the arts 4.Arts and culture strategy development and connecting with Waterloo on their culture plan Other ideas: Region-wide meetings of arts/culture advisory committee meetings o ACTION: ACAC members to email Carrie to advise their preferred subgroup. ACTION: Staff to contact CEI. Are there meetings open to the public? Will explore having an ACAC representative as an observer at CEI meetings (or set up regular report to ACAC by CEI) other municipalities might also want this access to updates on CEI activities. ACTION: Staff to follow up on work city of Barrie undertook about economic impact of the arts to use as an example 7.0Update on Chair Training: Earl McCluskie and Allan Hoch Took place on Wednesday, February 13.Chair and Vice Chairattended. Good session. Colin Goodeve gave training. Gave points about how to run meetings. 8.0Public Art Working Group(PAWG)Report: Sean Puckett Planning staff made a presentation about an opportunity for public art at the new entrance feature to the city (Fairway road). Susan Coolen(2013 Artist in Residence): Now collecting trash specimens for her Litter-Arti Project. Learn more about her project here: www.kitchener.ca/AIR. She is seeking involvement with the community. Community centres are excited to partner with Arts/Culture to work on initiatives to bring art to community centres. 9.0Music works update: Silvia DiDonato Will soon send an update by email to the 250 people who attended a Music Works session, and the 400 people who expressed interest in the initiative, which was started to help grow the local music industry. Next event will be afreemusic conference on Saturday, May 11in the Rotunda and Council Chamber. Conference will provide musicians and bands with information about marketing, publishing, andtour management. Will include a keynote speaker and awards. Conestoga College is providing strong support. Will likely be a topic inspiring debate. Locations of public washrooms in Victoria Park also coming forward. Ribbon cutting for new Provincial Courthouse in Kitchener will take place on Friday, February 22. Kelly was involved in a project that built a community based partnership in Tanzania. GIVE International is an organization that is seeking volunteers to go to Tanzania to further the project. Learn more: www.giveintl.org, or speak with Kelly about her experience. 11.0Members’ news Allan:‘Old Men Dancing’ will be at the Registry Theatre on Saturday, February 23. Pay as you leave for the value received. Will feature a variety of dancing. Sarry:Ontario’s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities offers financial incentives for businesses to hire students for summer employment. http://www.tcu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/brochure/employers.html D: Multicultural Cinema Club will host ‘Café Flicker’ at the Registry on March 10. Attendees are invited to present a project(film, music, script) and receive 10 minutes’worth of feedback. Aaron:Drayton Entertainment has opened the Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge.
