HomeMy WebLinkAboutCouncil - 2013-03-25 - Waterloo Chamber Players Grant Appeal - Tier 2 Waterloo Chamber Players Grant Appeal The recommendation of the Committee for partial funding only was made “as the projected budget does not demonstrate a need.” It is true that we had budgeted for a surplus in 2012/13; we are attempting to build our contingency fund so that we can survive a year of poor revenue without having to cease operation after 20 years of providing music to KW audiences and so that we can manage cash flow during the season. Our financial situation this season has changed dramatically since the budget was submitted. When preparing the budget for our 2012-2013 season, we included revenue from two projects which at the time we were expecting as part of our season. The first was a concert in Orangeville, Ontario. In 2010-2011 and in 2011-2012, Waterloo Chamber Players presented concerts in Orangeville under the direction of a local conductor. These well-attended concerts resulted in $2000 revenue in 2011 and $1700 in 2012. The Orangeville conductor intended to present at least one Waterloo Chamber Players concerts this season. Two possible concert dates were set: one in fall 2012, another in spring 2013. Health concerns on the part of the Orangeville conductor meant that no further plans were made for fall 2012. As the conductor’s health issues continue to be serious, he will not be able to go ahead with spring 2013 concert plans. The second is a fundraising project with Voices of Hope Choral Ensemble. In 2009 Waterloo Chamber Players took part with Voices of Hope in a benefit concert for Out of the Cold. Proceeds were split 50/50 between Waterloo Chamber Players and Out of the Cold, resulting in $2000 for Waterloo Chamber Players. In 2011-2012 Waterloo Chamber Players were involved in two fundraising projects with Voices of Hope: one for the ALS Society in November 2011 for which Waterloo Chamber Players donated all services, and another forthe Alzheimer’s society in March 2012 resulting in $800 revenue for Waterloo Chamber Players. Although Voices of Hope had indicated interest in Waterloo Chamber Players involvement for 2012-2013, they have decided to perform without the Waterloo Chamber Players in their spring 2013 concert. As a result of decisions by the collaborators with whom we planned to work our revenue has been reduced by $2300 in the Fundraising Services category. We are attempting to offset that loss by obtaining increased corporate sponsorship and individual donations, but as of the end of February, even with the full Kitchener grant requested and with generous gifts from our supporters, we forecast a deficit on the 2012/13 season of $150. We hope that the Council will reconsider the recommendation of the Community & Infrastructure Services Committee to reduce support of Waterloo Chamber Players this season. 5 (c) - 1
