3.0Intersection of Art and Digital Technology: Paul Salvini
Christie Digital is a technology company focused oncontentand the creation of compelling
visual experiences in cinema, large scale rental staging, sets and visual simulators.
1,500 employees; all research and development undertaken in Kitchener.
Recognizes that innovation is criticalin three arenas:
1.Business
2.Technology
3.Content/design
Christie’s growth is due to a business innovation: ‘Virtual print feed’, which aligns
distributors and exhibitors. This business model makes the use of the new technology a
win/win for all parties involved.
Christie strives to serve all aspects of the business chain, from creative content design to the
delivery of the projection equipment.
Uses for the technology:
Medical uses: scanning the body, determining heat, then re-projecting a visual image
o
of what’s under the skin.
Display tiles and screens (MicroTiles): available in creative shapes requiring the
o
design and delivery of special content.
Visualization: Animation captures data in a visual way. Challenge: How do you
o
visualize things in a persuasive meaningful way?

Large format interactive experiences are the wave of the future. Applications and
o
experiences are needed to support technology.
Christie works backwards to develop new technology. Starts by considering users challenges
and needs. Uses technology to address the challenges/needs.
Some of Christie’s innovations include:
Increasing frame ratesto move more data through a projector, creating smoother
o
motionandbetter 3D.
Achieving higher brightnessand high quality imageryto deliver ‘3D the way it is
o
meant to be seen.’
‘Book of Shapes’, a demonstration of how the MicroTile technology has been used
o
creatively around the world.
Working on achieving higher spatial resolution (4K).
o
Laser is the future of projection.
o
Working on 3D projection mapping (indoor and outdoor): to project new visual
o
experiences of existing buildings, etc. Buildings become a 3D canvas to showother
things.
Working on themed vehicle interiors.
o
Christie recognizes that content is key, as it drives the need for projection and display.
Supportive of initiatives to grow our local artistic community, further the artistic agenda and
design thinking, andto attract talent and encourage innovation in business.
Content creators are artistic, with a technical bent.
Christie runs an artist in residence program out of the Hub. Goals of program: to fund artists
to create content and start new businesses. Also a test facility for high frame rate movie
making. Gives artists in the community the chance to publicly exhibit their work, which can
spawn further creativity.
