CSD-13-056
SUBJECT: NOISE EXEMPTION REQUEST – 552 HIDDEN VALLEY
ROAD
RECOMMENDATION:
That an exemption to Chapter 450 (Noise) of the City of Kitchener Municipal Code be
granted Michael Saunders for a birthday party to be held at 552 Hidden Valley Road on
Saturday June 15, 2013, between the hours of 2:00 PM and 11:00 PM.
BACKGROUND:
The Mr. Michael Saunders is planning to host a birthday party at his residence, at 552 Hidden
th
Valley Road, on Saturday June 15. The event will include some live music held outdoors. As
such, he is requesting an exemption to Chapter 450 (Noise).
REPORT:
The Mr. Saunders indicates that his property backs onto a highway which already creates a
somewhat elevated level of noise. Nonetheless, he understands the importance of controlling
the volume to minimize the impact of the music and will ensure that it is turned off at 11 PM. He
will also ensure that his surrounding neighbours are advised in advance of the event.
Mr. Saunders had a similar event last year with a noise exemption in place. Staff advise that 1
complaint was received and it was determined that it was originating from a property across the
expressway. It appears that the weather conditions may have played a role in how the sound
travelled for a period of time during that particular evening. Staff advise that there were no
complaints originating from the immediate neighbourhood.
ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN:
This request supports the Community Priorities of Quality of Life, as contained in the City’s
Strategic Plan.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
As this is a private event, there is no large degree of community engagement required.
However, the property owner will ensure that his adjacent neighbours are advised of the event
in advance.
