CSD-13-073 (Addendum Report to CSD-13-053)
SUBJECT:
AMENDMENT TO ELECTION SIGN REGULATIONS
CHAPTER 680 OF THE MUNCIPAL CODE
RECOMMENDATION:
That the proposed by-law, dated June 12, 2013, attached to CSD-13-
be adopted.
BACKGROUND:
N/A
REPORT:
The City proposed the amendments to the Sign By-law through CSD-13-053 with respect to
elections signs to provide consistency with Regional Sign By-law requirements and industry
standards. Since the writing of CSD-13-
-laws that affects the proposed by-law amendment. The Regional by-law
regulates the overall height of the sign from grade at 0.9 metres (2.95 feet) and the height of the
actual sign face from top to bottom at 0.8 metres (2.62 feet). The City by-law regulates only the
overall height of the sign from grade to the top of sign at 0.9 metres (2.95 feet). This regulation
does not require amendment as it is already in keeping with the current Regional by-
height restriction.
As a further note with respect to the industry standard for election signs, Regional staff has
advised that they consulted with a sign company in Cambridge who manufactures such signs in
amending their by-law. The reason for the increased width is that historically the corrugated
plastic sheet material used for the signs came in a stock size of 32 x 48 inches (0.8 x 1.2
metres). Consequently, the attached by-law (Appendix A) proposes to amend the election sign
width from 1.0 metre to 1.2 metres (3.28 feet to 3.94 feet). Given that the proposed election
sign width is increasing and the sign height will remain the same, there will be no issues with
candidates using signs produced for previous elections that meet the Sign by-law requirements.
