REPORT NO.: CAO -13 -021
SUBJECT: Kitchener Market Update
RECOMMENDATION: For information.
BACKGROUND:
Our farmers' market is among the oldest consistently operating markets in Canada. Its vibrant
colours, fresh - from - the -field produce, lively chatter and friendly faces have been enjoyed by
residents and visitors to the area for more than 140 years.
Continuing with its legacy of culture and tradition, in the spring of 2004, the Market opened in a
new marquee site on King Street, between Cedar and Eby Streets. Marking the eastern
entranceway to Downtown Kitchener, the facility is one of the most contemporary markets in all
of Canada.
The tradition continues, with a few, fun new additions
Today's Kitchener Market is an urban market that is both modern and inviting, all of the sights,
sounds and smells patrons have come to know and love about the market come alive in this
expansive space.
In our new space, we've added new features for patrons to enjoy including:
International Cuisine Vendors who are located on the upper level of the market where
you can enjoy ethnically diverse meals made right before your eyes or sit and sip a cup
of gourmet coffee.
The Marketplace built in 2010 — a 2,000 square foot community facility where you can
take a cooking class or rent it for your next meeting or event.
Fun events and live performances for all ages can be experienced in the Market and
often spilling out onto the Piazza. There's always a fun event happening at the
Kitchener Market such as our annual Food and Drink Festival, Kids Hop, holiday
celebrations, celebrity chefs, live music and more.

REPORT:
In the past year, the Kitchener Market has been enjoying much success. We have seen our
market grow and evolve: we have increased our customer foot traffic over the previous year by
8.5% for Saturday Market and currently enjoy approximately 600,000 visitors throughout the
entire year; we have had an overwhelming responses to our programs being offered to all ages
from Kids Hop and Art Innovators to International Cooking Class Series and Top Chef
Challenges. We have fostered solid partnerships within the community to educate and offer
overall improvements to our community.
ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN:
The Kitchener Market provides comprehensive community services that promote quality of life,
diversity, and a dynamic downtown. These community services are aligned with the City of
Kitchener Strategic Plan for 2011 -2014.
Quality of Life: The City of Kitchener shares a vision for the community of maintaining
basic services, in addition to providing extra amenities that enhance quality of life. The
Kitchener Market aligns itself with this vision by not only making accessible fresh, local
foods, but also by offering services over and above the basics; such as free family -
focused special events and cooking programs. The marketplace is also available for
family and cultural celebrations at a very reasonable cost.
Diversity: Kitchener is a diverse community, with residents who look to the Kitchener
Market to meet their different wants and needs. The Market offers opportunities for
inclusion and recognition of diversity by understanding that various programs, cultural
festivals, international foods, classes, and events will appeal and relate to different
people. Through offering a broad range of services we not only meet the various needs
in the community, but we also help our customers feel supported and celebrated in their
differences.
Dynamic Downtown: The City of Kitchener has, over the past ten years, created a
lively and thriving downtown core. The Kitchener Market plays a key role in the vitality of
downtown Kitchener by attracting residents and visitors to the market through offering
unique and diverse services and facilities. The Kitchener Market pushes the boundaries
of what a farmer's market typically offers — this is done by continually re- evaluating our
services and creating partnerships in the downtown in order to provide the very best of
what we hear our community wants.
