SUBJECT:
AFFILIATION OF KITCHENER WATERLOO BADMINTON
CLUB
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Kitchener Waterloo Badminton Club be approved as an affiliated minor sport
group with the City of Kitchener, per Council Policy I-471 MINOR SPORT AFFILIATION;
and,
That the Kitchener Waterloo Badminton Club be added as an insured group to the City of
Kitchener’s Minor Sports third party liability insurance program.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Kitchener Athletics section currently works with 43 affiliated minor sport groups.
Advantages to affiliation includes; no charge meeting space once per month, access to potential
grant opportunities, and third party liability insurance coverage. Athletic staff also provides
services to minor sports groups to ensure they are operating in a democratic manner and
encourage sustainability.
Criteria to become affiliated include but are not limited to:
The group must be non-profit and operate under the authority of a volunteer Board of
Directors or Executive committee elected by the membership.
The group must service Kitchener or Kitchener Waterloo residents. Support is provided
to the associations programming primarily for club members that are 18 years of age
and under.
Residency requirements include the membership be comprised of one hundred per cent
Kitchener Waterloo residents for instructional, intramural or recreational programs.

REPORT
:
The Kitchener Waterloo Badminton Club has applied to the City of Kitchener to become an
affiliated minor sport group and to be added as an insured group to the Minor Sport Third Party
Liability Insurance policy. The KW Badminton Club has been offering quality badminton
programs in this community for 80 years. The Club is governed by a dedicated volunteer Board
of Director’s adhering to the principles outlined in their club bylaws and incorporation policies.
The Club currently has 30 volunteers, and 412 registered athletes of which 164 are Kitchener
residents. One hundred seventy four members are in the minor age category.
The goal of the club is to promote the sport of badminton within the region through a variety of
specialized programs, including youth coaching clinics, OBA sponsored tournaments and open
play times. This organization is hoping to become affiliated in order to collaborate with city staff
on advertising opportunities and build partnerships with other sports clubs. Affiliation will support
the club’s continued development as a sustainable community organization including the
provision of quality badminton programs for citizens of our community. They meet all the
required criteria to become an affiliate.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
None.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
The City of Kitchener will have 44 Minor Sport affiliated groups with the addition of this sport
club. Each of the organisations are actively engaged and supported through the Athletic section.
Staff strive to maintain ongoing communication and provide tools to ensure sustainability for
each sport organization.
