DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
December 18, 2013 City of Kitchener
The Downtown Action & Advisory Committee along with the Economic Development
Advisory Committee met this date, Chaired by Rod Regier, Executive Director of Economic
Development .

1. New Business
1.1 Landing Pad Program
Thom Ryan provided an update from information received at EDAC & DAAC
meetings held in November. The two objectives of the Landing Pad program are to
improved downtown Kitchener upper storey spaces and create renovated office
spaces (landing pads) for startup companies in downtown Kitchener.
Motion:
(prepared jointly on behalf of DAAC & EDAC)
To endorse the City of Kitchener Startup Landing Pad Improvement Grant
program in principle to improve upper storey spaces and provide “landing
pad” spaces for startup businesses in downtown Kitchener, as presented
th
by staff to EDAC November 27th and to DAAC on November 28, 2013.
We believe the Startup Landing Pad program will allow more creative
economy businesses to move into downtown, adding vibrant spaces and
people to the our city core, increasing cultural traffic, and enhance long
term viability of currently underused commercial space.

1.2 Innovation District Visualization
Michael Borland, Co-op student from the University of Waterloo presented two 3D
models of potential development massing scenarios using a FSR of 2.0 and 4.0 for
each parcel of vacant/underutilized public and private lands within a 600m pedestrian
walking radius of the future Multi Modal Station in the Innovation District.

1.3 Project Updates/2013 Year-in-Review
Rod Regier gave a brief summary of 2013 activities including new downtown
programs/intiatives such as Night Shift; Food Trucks on Civic Square; Bike Fest; and
Art Markets
