DELEGATIONS
3.0Music Cultural Tourism: Minto Schneider
For the 2014 edition of the annual Waterloo region Travel Guide (released in March), WRTMC
highlighted all the music events and festivals in various musical genres taking place across
the region.
Goal: to promote our region as a cultural destination where music happens.
Packages combining event tickets and lodging were sold on WRTMC web site, but were not
overly successful. In future, will alter the marketing plan to offer these packages through
festival web sites, rather than through the WRTMC web site.
Metrics for campaign success: Packages sold through WRTMC site, festival and event
attendance, and Meridian system ticket purchases and hotel reservations.
Targetmarketsinclude: ‘young gogos’in the Greater Toronto Area: 18-49. Also Barrie and
Windsor.
Challenge: Toronto is close enough that music festival consumers go home rather than stay
in hotels.
Advertising appeared in Exclaim summer music festival guide, Now Magazine, Globe and Mail
(digital site). Also newsletters, social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, press releases.
ACAC Comments:
Connection with future ‘Ontario Live’ (Province of Ontario initiative) could serve WRTMC
well in its promotion of music events and festivals. Ontario Live includes an online
forum/blog/data baseon music. Will answer the question, ‘where is live music taking place
near me?’
The Region of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener are committed to using Ping Street
(location based discovery tool). Could WRTMC benefit from Ping Street, too?

A centralized data base of events/locations/organizations/groups maintained by ‘data
librarians’ that could inform the calendar feature of any interested web site or application
would be useful.
ACTION: Staff to add data collection and dissemination to an upcoming agenda; perhaps a report
from the regional data-sharing group.
4.0Arts Reboot: Martin De Groot
A community initiated and organized full day rally to ‘reboot the arts in the region’ took
place in May, 2014 at THEMUSEUM.
Advertised by social media.
Attendance was restricted to artists.
40 people took part in the full-day event.
Listed complaints about the art scene locally, then explored how to address the situation.
Concerns about communication, marketing and respect in the arts community.
Goal: spur action and engagement in developing solutions.
The idea for the KW Creative Guild (rescheduled to appear in front of ACAC in September)
was born out of the rally.
Next steps: Rally organizers hope to have another session to summarize the outcome and
develop next steps. Could include pitch sessions to kick start engagement at a future event.
ACTION: KWCreative Guild item to be added to September agenda.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
5.0Committee end-of-term wrap up: Identifying ACAC achievements
ACAC’s current term ends in November 2014.
Time to recap the achievements of the two year term (could be used in a reportto Council).

Our community has an audience that can be developed further. Example: Fluxible
Conference (about user experience) coming September 13-14. An opportunity to both
showcase talent and attract talent.
8.0Public Art Working Group Report: Sean Puckett
The Director of Transportation made a presentation about intersection painting as a means
of place-making, traffic calming and community engagement. PAWG supports the idea, and
provided advice to assist facilitating the project.
Staff from the Chicopee Community Centre attended to solicit ideas for youth arts
programming. PAWG provided ideas and suggested information with other community
centres.
The 2015 call for entry for artist in residence has been drafted, with the implementation of
several program enhancements suggested by PAWG.
Dwight Storring, the 2014 Artist in Residence will resume activity after a leave of absence
for health reasons. His residency will be extended to April 2015.
Community-led public art projects are becoming increasingly popular. These projects are
initiated by the public, rather than as outlined in the public art policy. Currently, there is
no policy governing these projects. Arts/Culture unit to work with the community on three
pilot projects (Alapinta Chilean Muralists—various locations, Cherry Park Neighbourhood
Association, Bike Racks at Community Centres).
9.0Downtown Advisory Committee update: no report
10.0Economic Development Advisory Committee update: no report
11.0Council report: Councillor Kelly Galloway-Sealock
Overall, the Big Music Fest was positive.
Public input is being sought on the development of a neighbourhood strategy. Provide input
on the Nieghbourhood Strategy.
Council now on summer break.
12.0Members’ news
Danielle:Mapping project with Creative Enterprise Initiative (CEI) is wrapping up. 800
pieces of data were mapped with Grand Social web site and the Region’s GIS system. Will
meet with CEI to discuss plan for next steps. Formats of the data make it difficult to share.
Ping Street might be one tool to disseminate. Typically cultural planning begins with a
culturemap. But the data from Grand Socialis about more about what to see and what to
do, than about cultural assets. The data will be passed back to the Region.

Helena: 24th Annual Homer Watson exhibition runs from June 14 –August 17. Artists include
