HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-05-22 DOWNTOWN ACTION & ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES May 22, 2014 City of Kitchener The Downtown Action & Advisory Committee met this date, commencing at 4:00 p.m. Present: Amina Gilani, Chair, Councillor Dan Glenn, Craig Beattie, Chris Machaud, D. Morton, and Brad Watson Staff: Hilary Abel, Cory Bluhm and Sandy Curzon 1. Information Items Co-Chair  Amina Gilani is unable to fulfill her co-chair duties which end November 2014. Councillor Glenn-Graham opened the floor to nominations to fill this role effective June 1, 2014 until November 30, 2014. In her absence, an email was read from Melissa Bowman who put forward her name for Co-Chair of DAAC. That the co-chair of the Downtown Action & Advisory Committee for the term ending November 30, 2014 be Melissa Bowman Approved Major Development Updates  100 Victoria St.S. – 50% of the 260 proposed units were sold within two days  KPL Central Library – reopening of the newly renovated and expanded library at 85 th Queen St.N. will take place on May 27.  305 King St.W. – Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter recently visited 305 King St.W. and is ‘blown away’ by what’s happening downtown Kitchener. He likened the changes to urban areas of San Francisco 2. Update on Food Truck ByLaw  C. Bluhm reviewed the challenges and results in accommodating food trucks to operate at various parks, festivals and events throughout the city.  Concern was raised that food trucks at Centre in the Square were parked too close to the main entrance  Action: C. Bluhm will discuss food truck parking options with Centre in the Square staff 3. Calendar of Events H. Abel provided an overview of the Downtown Live programs scheduled for this summer nd which starts June 2. Street Closures King Street will be closed from City Hall (Young St.) to the Walper (Queen St.) for seven days in July. Committee members provided street animation ideas which included interactive art, storytelling, buskers, and biz challenges such as tug-of-war and hula hoop 5. Downtown Website Committee members were asked to help populate website content under five categories. The following are some ideas:  Food & Finds – find a patio guide; festival guide; Woolverine Wool Shop; The Underground – Xteaco;  Events - cricket in the park; Cruising on King – who are you (owner) and where are you from; history of festival;  Innovators – Geek Girl dinners; Nerd Night;  Art - Ghost stores i.e Rum Runner; Music listings and musician profiles; angry filmmakers  Neighbourhood Life – feature chefs, market food court, Central Frederick Neighbourhood potlucks, community garden events, GRT bus rack video, transportation options, architecture and history of neighbourhood buildings 6.
