BACKGROUND: Ahrens Street East serves primarily as an access point to the Region of Waterloo, Region of Waterloo Police Service and the Kitchener Public Library. As a result of the recent reconstruction of local area facilities and Ahrens Street East, parking regulations will have to be reviewed. REPORT: Currently on-street parking is prohibited on the entire south side of Ahrens Street East, as outlined in the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2007-138. The reconstruction of Ahrens Street East included the installation of one lay-by parking bay on the south side of Ahrens Street East. The intended purpose of this parking bay is to accommodate deliveries and short-term parking to primarily assist the library and its operations. As such, Transportation Services staff is recommending that parking be permitted within the parking bay for a maximum of 15 consecutive minutes. ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN: This initiative falls under the Community Priority of Quality of Life. "Work with partners, including all orders of government, to create a culture of safety in our community." By working with the neighbourhood, on-street parking concerns have been addressed. 1 - 1 FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The approximate cost for sign installations for the roadway is $1000 and will be charged to the Civic District Garage project. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: INFORM — This report has been posted to the City's website with the agenda in advance of the council / committee meeting. CONSULT — This recommendation is supported by the Kitchener Public Library.
