ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
October 22, 2014 City of Kitchener
The Economic Development Advisory Committee met this date, chaired by
Jeremy Auger with the following members present, Adrian Conrad, Jamie Yantz,
Mark Bingeman, Philip Jones, Johanna Classon-Romero, Thusenth
Dhavaloganathan, Kevin Fergin, Ashely Reid, Darrin Snider, Mark Derro, Glenn
Koehler, Jeff Hoekman
Staff in attendance: Rod Regier, Brian Bennett, Tracey Murray, Cory Bluhm,
Chris Farrell
1. Waste Management Presentation
Cari Howard, Project Manager of Waste Diversion Programs for the Region of
Waterloo provided an overview and background on the current programs
provided in waste management through the Region of Waterloo. The committee
discussed the following:
a) The focus seems to be on residential diversion, what are the commercial
plans?
The costs associated with this are high due to the competition with
private landfills, including the cost of transporting across the border.
b) Which city is the leader in waste management?
Germany & Belgium currently are the best which is correlated to tax
costs. In Canada Nova Scotia has been a leader for a long time
c) What are the economic development opportunities that arise from waste
management?
Encouraging entrepreneurs to come up with recycling ideas is what
we are working on

2. Break-Out Sessions
With planning for the next KEDS underway, the committee has been asked to
participate in the development of the strategy. For the next few meetings, the
members will have the opportunity to work in small groups on the core areas of
focus moving forward. The Downtown Action Advisory Committee will be
responsible for the downtown area, leaving identifying working groups to this
committee.
