HomeMy WebLinkAboutSHCAC - 2015-03-05 - Waterloo Region Active Living Charter WaterlooRegionActiveLivingCharter Vision:AvibrantandhealthyWaterlooRegionwhereallcitizensareengagedinactive WebelieveinenrichingWaterlooRegionbyencouragingphysicalactivity,activeplay,andalltypesof movementthroughouttheday.OurvisionincludesaRegionthatpromotesmovementateveryopportunity, embracesactivelivinginthedesignandplanningofneighborhoodsandpublicspaces,andplaysanimportant roleinestablishingsupportivesocial,political,andbuiltenvironments.Inanactiveregion,children,adults, andfamiliesworktogethertocreateacommunitythatpursueshealthylifestylesandengageseveryoneto theirfullpotentialinlearning,working,andplaying. š-wz;Ý;·wz­Ýz­zš“rÞ;-ŒŒEš©ŒŒŒ;Ý;Œ­šEmšÝ;©“’;“·r;7Ò-·zš“Œz“­·z·Ò·zš“­r “;zmw,š©wšš7­­š-z·zš“­rŒz‰;’z“7;7-zÝz-m©šÒ¦­r“7-z·zé;“­·šÞš©‰-šŒŒ,š©·zÝ;Œä·š ©;-w·wz­­w©;7mšŒr“-wš©;7z“·w;EšŒŒšÞz“m¦©z“-z¦Œ;­u 1.CommitmenttoGettheRegionMoving ˜‘;believethatphysicalactivityplaysanimportantroleinhealth,wellbeing,andquality oflifeforindividuals.Wesupportandpromoteallkindsofmovementatalltimes.We cangettheRegionmovingby: ˜{Ò¦¦š©·z“mcitizenstoincorporatemovementinallaspectsoflife,including:work,active modesoftransportation,dailylife,andleisuretime,aswellasexerciseandsport. ˜w;-;zÝz“macommitmentfromschoolsandworkplacestoincorporateopportunitiesfor studentsandstaffto"Moveaš©;v{z·[;­­¾." ˜9“­Ò©z“mthatstrategiestoimprovephysicalactivitycomplementinsteadofcontradict effortstoimprovehealthyeatingandmentalhealth,sincehealthyeating,physical activity,andmentalhealthareinterconnected(ROWPH,2013). 2.EducationandAwareness ˜‘;endorse greatereducationandawarenessaboutactiveliving,thebenefitsofan activelifestyle,andopportunitiesformovement.Thiscanbeencouragedby: ˜t©š’š·z“mphysicalactivityskilldevelopmenttoincreasethecompetenceand confidenceofindividualswhilebeingactive.Aparticularfocusshouldbeoneducating childrenandyouthtoensurethattheyhavethecapacitytobeactivethroughouttheir lives(MOHLTC,2010). ˜L“-©;­z“mpublicawarenessofthevarietyofactivitiesandtypesofmovementthatare consideredphysicalactivity;alsoincreasingawarenessofopportunities,programs,and facilitiesavailabletocitizensasphysicalactivitychoices. ˜/šŒŒ,š©·z“macrossdifferentsectorstoincreaseeducationaboutactivelivingusing consistentmessagingthatfollowstheprinciplesinthisCharter. 1 - 1 3.InclusionandEquity ˜‘;,;Œz;Ý;ŒŒ-z·zé;“­­wšÒŒ7wÝ;“equalopportunitytomakeactivelivingchoices.This involvesaffordable,accessible,andsafeoptionsforphysicalactivity thatareinclusiveof allcultural,physical,economic,mental,andotherrelevantconsiderati producebarrierstoactiveliving.Thisprinciplecanbeupheldby: ˜9“mmz“mdiversepopulationstoexplorethebarriersthatmaycauseinequitiesin opportunitiesforactiveliving. ˜L“·;“·zš“ŒŒädesigningappropriateprogramsthatconsideranyrealorpercievedbarriers toparticipationthatdiversepopulationsface. ˜{Ò¦¦š©·z“mfreeandlowcostoptionsforactivelivingasapriority,suchasacessiblepublic spacesforplay,hikingorwalkingtrails,aswellasaccessibleorganizedrecreationand programming. ˜9“­Ò©z“mavarietyofopportunitiesexistthatallowallindividualstoeasilyparticipatein activeliving,especiallythosewithphysicaland/ormentaldisabilities. 4.DesignandPlanningforMovement ˜‘;believethat thedesignandplanningofneighborhoods,publicspaces,and communitiesshouldencourageactiveliving.Alllevelsofgovernmenthavearoletoplayin creatinginfrastructurewhichwouldmakeincorporatingphysicalactivityintodailyliving easyandconvenient.Thiscanbeachievedby: ˜9“­Ò©z“mthatneighborhoodsandroadssupportwalkabilityandactivetransportation,by designingthemtobesafeandconvenientforcyclistsandpedestrians. ˜t©šÝz7z“mpublicspaceforactiverecreationandplay,suchasparksandgreenspace,so thateveryneighborhoodhaseasyandconvenientaccesstosuchplaces. ˜9“­Ò©z“mfundingisavailabletoimproveandmaintaininfrastructure,facilities,andpublic spacesforactiverecreationandplay. 5.InvestinHealth ˜‘;believethathealthisavalueinitself.We encouragephysicalactivitybecauseit contributestophysicalandmentalhealth,preventschronicdisease,improvessocial connectednessandqualityoflife,provideseconomicbenefits,andcontributesto environmentalsustainability.Amoreactivepopulationwillcostoursocietylessby reducingeconomicstrainonthehealthcaresystem.Wecaninvestinhealthandactive livingby: ˜L“Ý;­·z“minbetterhealthpromotionanddiseasepreventionstrategiesthatinclude physicalactivity;thiscouldrequirecollaborationbetweenthehealthsectorandother relatedsectorssuchaseducation,housing,environmentalsustainability,and employment. ˜.ÒzŒ7z“mthecapacityofindividuals,communities,organizations,andgovernmentsto makeinformeddecisionsaboutactivelivingandimplementingaccountabilitymeasures. ˜©m;·z“mtherootcausesofpoorhealthsuchaspoverty,lackofeducation,poorsocial supportnetworks,andsoon. 1 - 2
