BACKGROUND: The Huron Natural Area (HNA) master plan was approved in 2001 and today, HNA is Kitchener's premier and largest publicly owned natural area. HNA is a partnership project with the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB), and the City, through a joint ventures agreement. Through this agreement the City operates and manages the park in keeping with the original masterplan vision of stewardship, conservation and education. The City of Kitchener is planning to construct its first children's natural playscape at the Huron Natural Area. A natural playscape involves the design of dynamic nature - inspired play areas by incorporating built play structures with natural elements (plants, water, topography, logs, boulders, etc.) and by providing a sensory experience of nature through a variety of play opportunities. The introduction of this emerging approach to play is in response to recent studies that indicate children are spending less time outdoors and less time connecting with nature.
