Laurie welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the Compass Kitchener Advisory Committee. She provided a brief
background on herself and on the Committee. Typically meeting on the first Wednesday of each month from 4 -6:00 pm,
the committee will receive their meeting package approximately one week prior to the meeting via email. Agenda's and
minutes are also available on the city's internet site: www.kitchener.ca. Generally speaking, meetings take place in the
Conestoga room, however this may change from time to time, please check the agenda when it is circulated.
Subcommittee meetings may occur during or outside of regular committee meetings, depending on requirements of
agenda. Parking is available either on street or below city hall, please see Jenn for a parking pass if you choose to park
below city hall. Committee members were provided with a package containing recent reports and presentations Compass
Kitchener has been involved in as well as the Terms of Reference and additional key documentation. Committee
members are asked to review prior to the next meeting. Information can be provided on a memory key — please advise
Jenn if this is your preference.
1. Introductions
We circled the table with introductions from each of the members, both new and returning, providing some
background on work experience and reason for choosing to get involved with Compass Kitchener, as well as past
experience with the committee for those returning.
2. Legislated Services Orientation
• With use of a PowerPoint presentation, Daphne Livingston provided information on Advisory Committee roles,
responsibilities and relationships. She thanked advisory committee volunteers for their important participation on the
committee.

• Laurie reviewed the AODA training booklets covering Accessible Customer Service and Ontario Human Rights
Code.
• She highlighted a volunteer form and photograph release form both contained within the package provided to
members and requested they review and sign, returning to Laurie or Jenn at the end of the meeting.
Compass Kitchener Overview and Terms of Reference
• Laurie reviewed the Terms of Reference with the Committee, noting she would like them to be an item on the
committees workplan as it is necessary for them to be updated. She explained the strategic planning process and
where we currently stand within the process, indicating that in the past year, Compass Kitchener Advisory
committee completed significant work focused on identifying the Community's six key priorities. The focus of this
next year will be on integrating these community priorities into the organization, and Compass Kitchener will play an
important part of this process.
• The Compass Kitchener Report Card is also a significant responsibility for the committee, and will have a
subcommittee formed to focus on this specifically.
• The committee is active in community engagement in many ways including general engagement, youth
engagement, and voter turnout. Laurie provided information on various engagement examples and opportunities
for Compass Kitchener members.
• Additionally, there are times when Compass Kitchener will be called upon to participate as a neutral party in a key
community issue. Chris Hyde provided the example and an explanation of participation with the community
consultation on LEAF Funding.
• Laurie highlighted two additional potential opportunities for the committee to participate with: Neighbourhood
Strategy, and Age Friendly Communities.
January 14, 2015 - 2 - CITY OF KITCHENER
■ Laurie encouraged the committee to provide input and feedback from a citizen perspective. Council very much
appreciates this.
■ Information on past committee meetings is available on the city's website.
■ The committee has some standard sub committees, however they are flexible to the new committee and may adjust
based on interest from members. Further discussion on sub committees will take place at the next meeting.
4. Other Business
■ Nothing at this time.
