Community Priorities Presentation
• Jenn provided a presentation on the strategic planning process undertaken by the city. Beginning with a high level
review of the four phases of the process, she explained that Compass Kitchener participates primarily in the first
phase, the community assessment. She provided details on the process undertaken for the Environics Survey, as
well as the Your Kitchener, Your Say? process, advising almost 3000 residents were engaged in these processes
overall (Environics: 1002, +3.1 % margin of error; Your Kitchener, Your Say ?: 1948). Results from Environics
indicate that 87% of residents believe overall quality of life in the city is excellent or good, 74% are very or
somewhat satisfied with City of Kitchener Government, and 82% believe we have very or fairly good value for tax
dollars, however they are less confident when it comes to planning for the future — which is all the more reason to
build a solid strategic plan with community involvement. The results of the survey helped staff select the top 5
community priorities. Pieces of the remaining priorities were also tied in where community input suggested it would
be beneficial. The Your Kitchener, Your Say? process undertook a plethora of community engagement techniques,
Jenn shared the branding for the project and details on some of the learnings from engaging in various ways. Input
received through this process help define what was learned through Environics and once analyzed, resulted in the
Community Priorities for Action document. Next, Laurie will work within the organization to consider current work in
progress, provincial, regional and local trends as well as leading practices in the municipal sector, she will develop
strategic options taking into account resource constraints and authority to take action, then gather Council input on
goals and strategies and confirm direction for the next 4 years by June 2015.
• Compass Kitchener asked questions and sought clarification throughout this presentation. The Strategic Plan is
designed to provide the organization with direction focused for the next four years. It acts as our umbrella strategy
with other corporate strategies falling within priority areas. Further, it acts as the basis for the Compass Kitchener
Report card to Citizens.
