HERITAGE KITCHENER MINUTES
APRIL 5, 2016 CITY OF KITCHENER
The Heritage Kitchener Committee met this date, commencing at 4:05 p.m.
Present: Mr. G. Zeilstra - Chair
Councillors J. Gazzola and Z. Janecki and Messrs. S. Miladinovic, S. Thomson, B. Page, S.
Hamoen, S. Burrows, P. Ciuciura, and M. Timmerman.

OVERVIEW OF THE KITCHENER GREAT PLACES AWARDS (INCLUDING MIKE

WAGNER HERITAGE AWARDS
The Committee considered a presentation provided by Ms. S. Parks regarding the Kitchener
Great Places Awards. In addition, the Committee was in receipt this date of submission
requirements and nomination form, available on www.kitchener.ca, for the Mike Wagner
Awards.
Ms. Parks presentation gave an overview of the Mike Wagner Heritage Award program and
identified the three award categories, including: preservation/restoration of cultural heritage
resources; rehabilitation/adaptive reuse of cultural heritage resources; and, individual
contribution to the field of heritage conservation. She noted that the biannual program awarded
112 Benton Street, 51 Breithaupt Street, 34 Mansion Street, and 27 Schneider Avenue in
2013. She then encouraged members to consider and submit online nominations for the
awards, adding those properties which have been Designated under Part IV or V of the Ontario
Heritage Act, have received Designated Heritage Property Grants or have been issued
Heritage Permits, or are listed on the Municipal Heritage Register or inventory as a non-
designated property are eligible for nomination. She indicated nominations would be accepted
until April 29, 2016 and will be considered by Heritage Kitchener at the June 1, 2016 meeting.
In response to questions, Ms. Parks clarified owners of the nominated properties must agree to
the award nomination.
The Committee expressed general support for promoting the Kitchener Great Places Awards
and indicated that a table regarding the Mike Wagner Awards and Heritage Kitchener
initiatives could be placed at the awards ceremony to promote heritage in the City.
APPOINTMENT OF VICE-CHAIR

Mr. G. Zeilstra opened the floor to nominations for the position of Committee Vice-Chair.
Messrs. S. Miladinovic and S. Burrows were nominated. A vote was taken and Mr. Zeilstra
announced Mr. Burrows was the successful candidate for Vice-Chair for the remainder of the
term of this Committee.
On motion by Mr. M. Timmerman -
it was resolved:
Mr. S. Burrows, be appointed Vice-Chair of Heritage Kitchener for a term expiring
November 30, 2016

The Committee considered the Heritage Promotion Sub-Committee Agendas for their
meetings of March 1, 2016 and April 4, 2016. In addition, the Committee was in receipt of
notes from the March 1, 2016 meeting as well as a verbal update from the April 4, 2016
meeting.
Mr. S. Thomson provided a summary of the activities and ideas shared during the Heritage
Promotion Sub-Committee meeting. He reviewed some of the initiatives, including: hosting
information workshops for the owners of listed properties; creation of informative brochures for
each Heritage Conservation District for distribution by realtors when selling a home in the area;

non-
associated walking tours to promote heritage resources; and, encourage Councillors to
promote heritage in their Wards through their articles in the Kitchener Post.
Mr. Zeilstra elaborated on the plaque program and showed a sample plaque that could be
applied to a listed or Part V property. He indicated the initiative is in the brainstorming stage
and would return to the Committee in the future once additional information has been received.
HERITAGE BEST PRACTICES OPEN FORUM

A discussion took place regarding the heritage status of various properties within Kitchener.
Mr. L. Bensason responded to questions, advising the Heritage Designation Sub-Committee is
developing criteria that will assist in prioritizing listed properties for heritage designation. He
indicated designating City-owned properties is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in
preserving cultural heritage resources.
