HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSD-16-025 -Chicopee Ski Club Snow School and Racing Program Affiliation REPORT TO: Community and Infrastructure Services Committee DATE OF MEETING: May 2, 2016 SUBMITTED BY: Kim Kugler, Director, Sport, 519-741-2200 ext. 7544 PREPARED BY: Bob Cheyne, Manager, Sport Development & Golf, 519-741-2200 ext. 7689 WARD(S) INVOLVED: All DATE OF REPORT: April 7, 2016 REPORT NO.: CSD-16-025 SUBJECT: CHICOPEE SKI CLUB SNOW SCHOOL AND RACING PROGRAM AFFILIATION ___________________________________________________________________ RECOMMENDATION: That the Chicopee Ski Club Snow School and Racing Program be approved as an affiliated minor sport group with the City of Kitchener, as per the City's Minor Sport Affiliation policy; and further, That the Chicopee Ski Club Snow School and Racing Program be added as an insured Minor Sports third party liability insurance program. BACKGROUND: Since 1934, Chicopee has been a beacon for snow enthusiasts of all ages and celebrates 82 years of providing skiing enjoyment to the residents of the City of Kitchener and surrounding areas. Chicopee is proud to be one snowboard family centres. The Chicopee Ski Club is incorporated as a non-profit entity owned by its members and expertly managed by the Executive Director and Senior Management team. Chicopee leases the lands from the Grand River Conservation Authority. All facilities, lifts, equipment, etc. on the land are wholly owned by the Club. An elected Board of Directors of ten volunteer non-members represent the membership as a governance board and assist in providing support to the 19 full time year round and 400+ seasonal and part-time employees. Chicopee, like all businesses, must ensure its long term sustainability. One key area that contributes to sustainability is the provision of the Snow School and Racing Program providing local youth with both recreational learning opportunities through to high level competitive development. As of 2014/15 the program has 3779 total participants of which 2078 (55%) are The programs are offered to individuals who range in age listed as Kitchener residents. from 3to 18 years, but their objective is to create alifelong passion and enjoyment of the sport in their athletes. *** This information is available in accessible formats upon request. *** Please call 519-741-2345 or TTY 1-866-969-9994 for assistance. 4 - 1 REPORT: As per Council Policy Resolution I-471 Minor Sport Affiliation (July 2, 2002),minor sports groups wishing to affiliate with the City of Kitchener must be not-for-profit and operate under democratic principles, and not duplicated the services of an existing minor sports group. The applying organization must display an interest and ability to meet all other aspects of the City's affiliation policy within two years of affiliation. The goals of the Chicopee Ski Club in seeking affiliation are to: create a stronger connection with the City of Kitchener and its sports development program. improve connectivity and partnership with the local sport and business community. enhance the profile of the program through astronger connection with the local neighbourhood and as a hub for a variety of physical activity options. enhance new business and awareness of the sport program through Sport Tourism. The Snow School and Racing Program, first and foremost, is dedicated to ensuring that every child and youth has the opportunity to learn the sport of alpine skiing and pursue it to their fullest extent of their ability and interest level. ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN: The Chicopee Ski Club aligns with two areas of our Strategic Plan. Leadership and Community Engagement - collaboration with local volunteers and sport groups in the delivery of programming. Quality of Life - investing in the health and vitality of our youth and encouragement of life long participation in sport. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: N/A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: INFORM advance of the council / committee meeting. COLLABORATE The City of Kitchener will have 44 Minor Sport affiliated groups with the addition of the Chicopee Ski Club Snow School and Racing Program. Each of the organizations is actively engaged and supported through our Community Services Department resources andSport Development section staff.
