SUBJECT:On-Street Parking Regulations – Max Becker Drive

RECOMMENDATIONS:
That parking be prohibited on the north side of Max Becker Drive from Copper
Leaf Street to a point 62 metres west thereof; and further,
That the Uniform Traffic Bylaw be amended accordingly.
BACKGROUND:
Max Becker Drive is a major collector roadway with primarily residential land use. In
response to a request, on-street parking regulations have been reviewed. Currently, on-
street parking is prohibited on the south (odd-numbered) side of Max Becker Drive from
Activa Avenue to Commonwealth Street and on the north (even-numbered) side from
Copper Leaf Street to a point 20 metres west of Copper Leaf Street. Parking is
permitted on the north (even numbered) side of Max Becker Drive from Lemonbalm
Street to a point 20 metres west of Copper Leaf Street for a maximum period of three
(3) consecutive hours, as outlined in the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law No.
2007-138.
REPORT:
Transportation Services received a request to review the existing on-street parking
regulations. The request cited concerns related to reduced visibility due to parked
vehicles on the roadway. The horizontal curvature of Max Becker can obstruct sightline
visibility, and therefore is considered a safety concern. As a result, citizens in the
immediate area were notified of the proposed parking regulations in April 2016. There
were no responses received that objected to the proposed parking prohibition at that

time. Therefore Transportation Services recommends that parking be prohibited on the
south side of Max Backer Drive from Active Avenue to Commonwealth Street and on
the north side from Copper Leaf Street to a point 20 metres west of Copper Leaf Street
to improve overall road user safety.
ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN:
The recommendation of this report supports the achievement of the city’s strategic
vision through the delivery of core service.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
The approximate cost for implementing “No Parking” signage is approximately $200 and
will be taken from the existing sign maintenance budget.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
INFORM – This report has been posted to the city’s website with the agenda in advance
of the council / committee meeting. The constituents were made aware of the proposed
changes to prohibit parking in this section of Max Becker Drive.
