2. Follow up to Minutes

Report Card Data Review and Next Steps — Laurie Maicher
■ Laurie provided a brief overview of the process the committee will use to process through the analyzed data that
was received from the 5 strategic priority subcommittees. Each priority should receive a 5 minute presentation of
the summary they developed, followed by 10 minutes for the committee to discuss, ask further probing questions
and come to an agreement on placement on the evaluation scale. Laurie added, the discussion on each topic will
not only assist with coming to an agreement on evaluation, it will also provide additional information to the Report
Card subcommittee for use in the presentation which will be developed for council.
■ Lynn reviewed the summary provided for open government including the areas of strength and areas that need
attention.
■ The committee discussed Council Reports and the degree of technical language they may have. Some felt there
could be a simplified version of reports for residents to review, others felt that reports are a matter of public record,
and used in decision making — and to this degree, require technical information so that the best decision can be
made. The summary indicated Corporate Customer Service as a strength, however, a number of community
members responding to the mail survey indicated dissatisfaction. The committee agreed in this case that it be
noteworthy to continue to strive for improvement in this area.
■ Chris reviewed the summary provided for Strong & Resilient Economy including the areas of strength and areas
that need attention.
■ A question was raised about citizens feeling that the City is too focused on the tech sector was taken into account in
the evaluation. Some members indicated they could not see themselves in the new `Make it Kitchener' Economic
Development Strategy. The committee discussed ways in which the new economic development strategy for
Kitchener has taken a broader focus on the economy this time. A holistic approach would be beneficial, focusing
energies not only on city-wide economic development and urbanization, but also a diversity of sectors to achieve
success. The committee agreed to provide feedback to Council to be mindful of people's concerns and perception
about putting too much focus on the tech sector moving forward. Downtown was not initially mentioned in the
summary, however the committee agreed it would be beneficial to include comments that reflect a high level of
citizen satisfaction around the festivals and events downtown. They commented that there is positive changes
happening and they are excited to see how the downtown changes when the ION is in service and the new
residential developments are fully occupied. These comments aim to encourage continued momentum, as well as
acknowledge the continued investment in the heart of the city.
■ Compass Kitchener agreed to schedule an additional meeting to continue with the remaining three focus area's,
Jenn to send a Doodle poll to full committee.
