BACKGROUND: Breithaupt Street is a local road that crosses Margaret Avenue, a major collector roadway. In 2010, left turn and through movements were prohibited to traffic travelling southbound on Breithaupt Street at the intersection of Margaret Avenue due to sightline visibility concerns. REPORT: Currently, left turns and through movements are prohibited travelling southbound on Breithaupt Street and Margaret Avenue at any time, as outlined in the City of Kitchener Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2007-138. Margaret Street bridge reconstruction was completed in fall 2015. Through construction, the parapet wall that was identified by Transportation Services as a sightline concern was redesigned, and consequently sightline visibility at the intersection was improved. *** This information is available in accessible formats upon request. *** Please call 519-741-2345 or TTY 1-866-969-9994 for assistance. 5 - 1 Transportation Services has reviewed and no longer feel visibility is a concern. As a result Transportation Services is recommending that left turns and through movements be reinstated on Breithaupt Street at Margaret Avenue at all times. ALIGNMENT WITH CITY OF KITCHENER STRATEGIC PLAN: The recommendation of this report supports the achievement of the city’s strategic vision through the delivery of core service. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The approximate cost for removing pavement markings and signage from this intersection is $300 and will be taken from the existing sign maintenance budget. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: INFORM – This report has been posted to the city’s website with the agenda in advance of the council / committee meeting.
