DATE OF REPORT: November 8, 2016
REPORT NO.: INS-16-090
SUBJECT:Removal of Prohibited Movements – Breithaupt Street at
Margaret Avenue
___________________________________________________________________________
RECOMMENDATIONS:
That left turns and through movements be reinstated southbound on Breithaupt
Street at Margaret Avenue at all times; and further,
That the Uniform Traffic Bylaw be amended accordingly.
BACKGROUND:
Breithaupt Street is a local road that crosses Margaret Avenue, a major collector
roadway. In 2010, left turn and through movements were prohibited to traffic travelling
southbound on Breithaupt Street at the intersection of Margaret Avenue due to sightline
visibility concerns.
REPORT:
Currently, left turns and through movements are prohibited travelling southbound on
Breithaupt Street and Margaret Avenue at any time, as outlined in the City of Kitchener
Uniform Traffic By-law No. 2007-138.
Margaret Street bridge reconstruction was completed in fall 2015. Through construction,
the parapet wall that was identified by Transportation Services as a sightline concern
was redesigned, and consequently sightline visibility at the intersection was improved.
