Notes regarding a Historical Plaque Program in the Town of Milton
At the April Heritage Promotion Subcommittee, I volunteered to look into historical
plaques mounted on buildings in the Town of Milton. Anne Fisher, a heritage planner,
for the Town of Milton referred me to the Milton Historical Society, which started and
continues to administer this program. Milton Historical Society has an application form
and criteria for the program on their web site at
http://www.miltonhistoricalsociety.ca/historic-buildings/homes/ to facilitate applications by
interested home owners. The cost to apply is $125.00. The metal plaques cost the
Society about $50.00 to have made. (Initially, the plaques were plastic). To prepare the
plaques, volunteers attend the Registry Office, gather information on the property and
contact Town staff to exchange information. To complete the process, the successful
applicant is given a plaque and a written history of their property. So far, 175 plaques
have been issued. Marsha Waldie, the volunteer who is in charge of the program,
suggests that a local history group needs to be part of the process to do the historic
research.
How the Plaques Are Used
The plaques are tied into walking tours which the Society prepares as well as books on
local history. The Society is starting a new project to plaque buildings in downtown
Milton with QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) which enable people
walking by to use their smart phones to learn about the properties with plaques.
